Re: Tarptent -vs- tarp+bivy

Hi,
You are correct that there is no real weight
savings in a tarp bivy set up, but it is more
versitle. I may only set up the bivy on a nice night,
set the tarp up as wind break at lunch, and set up the
tarp as a relaxing/cooking area if the weather is bad.
I also have a Hennesey hammock, an SD Ultralight
year, SD Half Dome, Walurus trekker tarp. I use them
all for various purposes, but always feel sort of
naked without a tarp.

Re: Thermolactyl

Hi,
Have used Damart in the past and found it more
comfortable and a bit warmer than polypro, but also a
bit heavier. About and equal trade off.

Walking sticks

I found this on the Internet and thoygght it was funny when people talk
about trekking poles.

Jack has a walking stick. Why does he feel the need to have a walking stick?
There are only four plausible reasons to carry a walking stick, two of which
enjoy a 100% correlation with jerkitude:
1. Because you are employing the walking stick ironically. If this is the
case, you are a jerk.

2. Because you want to appear rugged and outdoorsy. If this is the case, you
are a jerk.

3. Because of distinct quirkiness. This may or may not signify jerkitude; in
the case of my friend Catherine's husband Carl and his rosewood walking
stick with a compass in the head, for instance, it did not. Carl purchased
the walking stick because he was nervous about moving to Washington, DC, and
thought that carrying around a walking stick might be an effective crime
deterrent. Carl also has about him something of the air of a Victorian
dandy. He eventually lost the walking stick when he left it leaned up
against a hot dog stand on the campus of the George Washington University
School of Law.

4. Because you need a walking stick to walk, due to polio or a wound.

Re: Re: eVent vs Epic

I'm of the mind that if I pay (usually a lot) for a high tech fabric,
It better last a while. I'm not expecting to drop rocks on my
jacket/tarp/sleeping bag/pack/etc., but under normal wear, I think
equipment should not be disposable.

I make one exception for the case of odor proof bags to carry out
waste. ;-)

RE: Re: eVent vs Epic

I seem to be in the minority on this. What a surprise! I'm usually so
mainstream....lol.
When Wayne Gregory was asking about what a light weight pack should be, for
the G-Pack, I told him my idea of the perfect LD pack would be one that fell
apart as I raised my hands in victory at trails end. That way I knew I
didn't carry one ounce of over engineering or over durability through the
entire trip.
This was brought home to me one day as I was throwing about a thousand
dollars worth of packs in the dumpster. There was nothing wrong with them.
They were just too heavy and didn't have the features I wanted now. They
were all in excellent condition, 5 to 10 years old.
The only thing I could think as I was throwing them away was "Man, that was
a lot of wasted engineering and weight". I did manage to recover some older
Marmot and TNF (made back when they were a good company) sleeping bags by
cutting out the zippers, sewing in a foot sack, and converting them to
quilts.
I rarely expect my gear to last more than 2 years. It always does but I am
somewhat suspicious when it does. Maybe it was too well engineered. In other
words, too heavy.
I have very few items I'm still willing to use after 2 years. Esbit stove I
made four years ago, ID SilShelter I've had for a few years. I guess that is
about it. I've been using Big Agnes bags for about 3 years or so but I'm
starting to look for lighter replacements that still work like a BA.

Good point. Besides, it give you a chance to buy something new.

So, if you gear lasts two years, how often do you go out?

Re: Re: What is crypto? (was: Repackaging MP1 tablets)

I don't think the argument of the Yosemite paper was that people were
getting Giardia from not washing their hands, I think the conclusion
was that people were getting food poisoning from not washing, and it
was being misdiagnosed as Giardia.

Does hand gel kill giardia? I think there was a previous discussion
about this and a concern that the contact time for hand gel is not
long enough to kill all nasties since the alcohol in it evaporates
quite quickly, but I do not recall there being a concensus.

Re: eVent vs Epic

Jerry,

You get too much gear! where do I subscribe! :) (bex made me do it, I
don't like using 'emoticons' in posts, hehe)

Sounds like an interesting idea to me, tyvek 'throw away' frameless
packs that you could send yourself in care packages for thru-hikes.
would be nice (and marketable) if the price came down by a factor of
10 for these things. I still like the bombproof versions, they burn
longer...

Re: eVent vs Epic

On the eVENT front, I've been very happy with the ID eVENT south col
bivy, weighs in at 19 oz or so (a bit up from the EPIC bivies), but it
works fine as a standalone shelter and is *much* better construction
than the 'bag cover' bivys. I (and a few others) have reviews up on
them on BGT. I'm skeptical on the ability of the fabric to breath
enough to justify dropping the pit zips on jackets, but I'd love to be
proved wrong....

Also I *just* got my pair of eVENT Pearl Izumi encore gloves in the
mail, and aside from the fact that they're NOT seam sealed or taped
and water leaks in in just seconds under a faucet...(what's the point
of using waterproof breathable fabric and NOT seam sealing when 1/4 of
the product is seams!!!) I will see how durable these are, and may
work up the nerve to get out the seam grip (although it will need a
lot of precision work)...

Otherwise the fabric in general is 2-3+x as heavy as EPIC and seems to
be worth every ounce...

Weight Gain before the trail

My husband and I are planning our thru hike for 05. He is 5'9 and has a hard
time maintaining his current weight of 140 lb. He is solid as a rock but
thin as a rail. My question is: Shouldn't he try to gain, say 15 lb. or so
before hitting the trail. Isn't it common for most men to loose quite a bit of
weight within the first month or so?

Some suggestions for adding extra calories to gain a few pounds over the next
5 months would be appreciated.
