an update on my neatsheet bivy sack

coincidentally, i recently heard from the PCT thru-hiker to whom i
gave my neatsheet "bivy." the bivy is just a single layer of a small
neatsheet, folded over and sewn into a rectangular sack. i gave it
to him to use in conjunction with his 5x7 tarp, which he hadn't used
beofe and was somewhat nervous about using to keep himself dry. here
is what he had to say about it:

"greatness! perfect for a down bag that is pushing it rating wise
since it did effectively both resist moisture and add warmth. and
triples as a ground cloth! a blessing, i still have it and cant
thank you enough. i used it from the moist south east on the banks
of the cumberland to muir hut at 12000 feet to the lovely pacific
ocean sands at moonstone beach, north of arcadia. i was never
nervous on rainy or cold nights due to that thing."

while this does make me glow just a wee bit, it also makes me want to
whip another one up for myself.

It would probly be better to leave it at Rainbow Springs Camp Ground. They

Light External Frame Pack

There was quite a discussion a ways back regarding external frame
packs. I missed and cannot locate via archive search information
about which external FRAMES currently available are the lightest. A
friend of mine has back issues and feels he needs the structure of
an external frame. Once located, a light custom pack bag can be
sewn to keep the load as light as possible.

Thanks for any leads.

Thanks

Re: Light External Frame Pack

Hi Fred, The archives work strange. Type "external
frame" in the search box. THEN! Keep hitting NEXT.
It will go on for ever. For some groups of messages
it may say "None Found" or something like that. Just
keep hitting NEXT. I just found a lot of messages on
my search. Bill

Re: Q for someone familiar with AT

There have been intermittent problems with vandalism at that road
crossing over the years. The best resource to get updates about
local areas of the trail is the ATC, who can refer you to the
specific person involved with maintaining that section of trail.
They usually keep in contact with local police and other agencies
involved with the trail.
