Folks, I do not want to go to war over digital vs. film photography.
Both media have their pros and cons.

The immediate feedback and no apparent cost of processing certainly
attracts many backpackers to digital. However, the case is often
overstated by digital devotees.

The cost of 160 pictures (about 5 rolls of film) using slide film
with pre-paid processing mailers is less than 35 US dollars (Based
on a current check of NY prices).

I still maintain that for profesional quality (as the first post
asked about) photo equipment in a wilderness setting it is still
difficult to beat a good mechanical (i.e. not dependant on
batteries) SLR camera with pro grade optics, a good solid tripod,
and film.

Not exactly true. Lenses are generally sharper and more contrasty,
especially in the corners. Image stabilization/vibration reduction
makes a huge difference.

Nikon has a whole new series of lenses in the works that are
specifically designed for digital. But at 6 megapixels, they're
scarcely necessary. There will probably be two kinds of lenses
introduced -- one for the 4:3 digitals (a smaller sensor for the
consumer market generally about the size of the smaller-than-35mm APS
film format)and another for full-format cameras. Focus enhancement is
in the works and metering, moving forward from cameras like the F5,

Protein intake doesn't really have much of an affect on muscle
wasting. Fats and carbs are easily transformed by your body into
muscle protein (as any cow can tell you), and protein usually takes
MORE energy to break down anyway during the digestive process and
contributes very little to your overall nutrition. You really don't
have much in the way of "protein needs," contrary to popular belief
(which isn't to say you have none at all...)

I think the best source of calories (in terms of weight carried) is
in fats. I think one of the old mountaineering standbies is butter
rolled in brown sugar. Seriously.

Re: Q's about Povidone Iodine & Water Treatment

Sounds very dangerous to me. I would doubt that chemical is
meant for ingestion.

Re: Poll: do you feel that you have ever been mal-nourished ?

I disagree. Protein malnutrition is the most widespread
nutritional problem among children in the world today. The
disease is called Kwashiorkor and is caused by infants being
weaned from breast milk (an excellent source of protein) onto a
starchy diet.

Proteins are made from amino acids, not carbohydrates or fat.
Proteins can be metabolized to form glucose by a process called
gluconeogenesis, but neither glucose nor fat can form protein.

Re: Re: re. Zee digital & zee film

No need to be flip. Most of the bracketing I do ends up saved in my
files. Like you said, "different views of a single composition. I tend
to bracket a lot of sunrises and sunsets. I find the mood can be much
different with each bracket. I recently ran a 6 fram bracket on a sun
set and I love all of them but one. I very seldom bracket close-ups,
never on people or wildlife.

Re: Re: re. Zee digital & zee film

Slap a two or three stop ND filter over your lens and you should be able
to slow your shutter speed enough to get silky water. They only weigh
2.5 oz each.
