Last time I weighed mine, and I've lightened it slightly more since then, the
bottom of the WMGP was 2.70 ounces and the top was 1.34 ounces for a total of
just over 4 oz. - Ben

Check out the Colorado Trail. I hear it can be done in 4 to 6 weeks.

RE: SnakeSkins worth it?

FWIW I sure as heck hope so as I bought them due to the comments (Shane
in particular) I have heard from on the Hammock Camping list

Kind of a dumb question but for anyone that has used snakeskins
(properly) for the Hennessy Hammock...

Are they worth getting (and are they the greatest thing since sliced
bread)?

I've kinda heard conflicting statements about them being hard to use
or not... but are they definatly worth purchasing/using?

Thanks,

Balaclavas

I am looking for a balaclava. I see two in the campmor catalog. Both are
Manzella brand. One is an "Expedition Weight" polypropylene weighing 2 oz.
The other is a thermolite weighing 1.4 oz. Let's say worst case temperature
is mid-twenties. Anyone have experience that would lead me toward one or the
other?

Thanks.

Re: Balaclavas

Normally I'd say the lightest one but what kind of wind are you expecting?
Is this to be used as a sleeping hat or worn during activities?

Can you confirm this data? It is my understanding that anyone climbing
Whitney from any direction must have the Whitney Stamp. If this is untrue,
why would the PCTA's application for thru hikers also contain room for
Whitney Stamps, when, by and large, all thru hikers would be approaching
Whitney from Crabtree Meadows??

No Way

Re: NEED a trail recommendation!

The main Mt. Whitney Trail permits are issued via lottery. From other
trailheads you still need a permit but don't have to enter the lottery

"... access Mt. Whitney by entering from any other trail (i.e.
Shepherd Pass, Kearsarge Pass, North Fork of Lone Pine Creek for the
Mountaineers Route, etc.) you do not need to apply for the lottery.
The six-month rolling application process applies to trips that begin
at any trailhead other than the Main Mt. Whitney Trail..."

Re: Balaclavas

Hey Ben,

I'd say my first priority is for a sleeping hat but it would double as an
activity hat in the event of cold/windy weather. Wind? Well, whatever nature
sends. It seems to sometimes blow wherever I go. I guess it may come down to
which is the better insulator - thermolite or polypropylene. I have no idea.

Thanks.

Craig

Re: Balaclavas

I have found that even a very light balaclava will keep me comfortable down
to single digit temperatures. A hard hat liner is much lighter and often is
all that is needed. Another option I take along on all fall and winter trips
is a polypro tube scarf that can be left around my neck or pulled up to wear
like a balaclava if desired. As you know, pure polypro can sometimes get
pretty smelly. - Ben
