Re: Re: Fwd: [AutAdvo] Outrage over Michael Savage's Remarks Grows: ASA, UCP, The Ar

Hi ray,

We made the best of this little episode...with emphasis on "little". I
got to talk to the guy who wrote "The Geek Syndrome" and later
confronted that stubborn misconception that one can control autie's as
if they were us! What an exercise in futility that is. Savage should
have an autistic kid and then he'd learn humility.

It's good to see you. I've been asking around about you and in the
process found your blog. I had a link to an old one and thought you
had stopped writing. I was happy to find the new one thanks to Morgan.

Tink's apparently on vacation or something. She said she was taking a
break from blogging on her last entry.

I hope all is well. My bike got ripped yesterday but I was given an OK
replacement shortly afterwards. Being bikeless is not an option.

As you can tell there is not much going on here or anywhere for that
matter. It's eerie on the net lately. I guess it reflects the ho-hum
of our political and cultural life. Let's hope things pick up...for
the good!

A perfect analogy, indeed, Tom!

An autistic who has had their autism "ripped" from them (by ABA or
other attempted "cure") is in a parallel situation, with no option.

The replacement is a sense of comraderie with others on the spectrum
who show that the combined feelings of isolation and exhilaration
are not ironic, at least to the autistic population.

Autism is just as invaluable to an autistic as a cycle is to a
cyclist. Has anyone ever tried to find a "cure" for "cyclism"???

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Estee's Blog and Adam's FC's..."Note About Crying to Michael Savage"... Re: Cycling [was:Fwd: {AutAdvo} Outrage over ...Savage's..]

Hi Brian,

What a treat, two of my favs posted today...Brian and ray.

Good point about the analogy between my cycling and autism. If people
knew the truth about autism they'd be in training to loose their NT
perspective and try to become more autistic. Now that would be a true
"cure"!

I just found Estee's blog today, well I've been there before, and she
had some FC's of her son Adam on it. She's really new at the whole
thing and stumbling around like new facilitators do, but it's
interesting for us experienced facilitators to hear Adam speaking and
trying in his way to tell mom something. Funny too!

Anyway, here's the page and I sent a response but don't know if she
will OK it...

"Note About Crying to Michael Savage"

I encourage others to check it out and come back here and tell us what
they think Adam is saying.

Re: Estee's Blog and Adam's FC's..."Note About Crying to Michael Savage"... Re: Cyc

Ray,

Once again, an excellent interpretation. You are now the leading
interpreter of autie talk in the world! Congratulations.

I can't wait until there are lots more autie's talking as well as more
interpreters. At least it will end this interminable boredom we are
all now captives of.

What do you think ray, should we drill for oil? How about the subprime
stuff? Obama says us whites don't have to pay reparations. What would
Jesus do ray? Support gay marriage or mother's custody? Jeeze, what a
disaster!

It's Official... Thomas The Tank Is #1 with Auties!

http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=368&a=2683

Quote...

Conclusion

Thomas plays a vital role in the lives of some children with autism,
acting as an initial point of entry into realms as vital as speech,
emotion and imagination. For many other children on the autism
spectrum, Thomas serves as a comforting, familiar and reassuring
presence in a world that is frequently frightening and
incomprehensible.

Children with autism and Thomas the Tank Engine

Research and Findings

In June and July 2001, The National Autistic Society conducted a survey
of 81 parents of children with autism and Asperger syndrome to
investigate their putative 'special relationship' with Thomas the Tank
Engine. The survey confirmed our assumption from anecdotal evidence
that children with autism spectrum disorders associate far more
strongly with Thomas the Tank Engine than with other childrens
characters.

Summary Findings

    * Children on the autism spectrum associate with Thomas before any
other childrens character (57%).
    * These children maintain their association with Thomas longer than

AMEN to that. I predict he'll have an autistic grandchild (if he has any offspring at all).

Subject: Gluten free/casein free information night

Hi everyone, as some of you may know, I have started up a specialty food store that only carries foods that are gluten free and casein free.  We are having an information night this Thusday at Puzzle Pieces in Markham.  You are all welcome to attend.  There is no cost, just RSVP if you can make it.  Hope to see you there!

Path Foods
Gluten free.  Casein free.  Worry free.

Help is on the way!  Path Foods is coming to Puzzle Pieces.

Path Foods is the first store designed specifically to help families with Gluten free and Casein free diets.  We take the worry out of shopping and aim to save you both time and money while featuring foods your family will actually eat!

We stock a variety of GF/CF foods that will work for your diet at prices better than you'll find with other retail or mail order options.  More importantly, we fact check every item.  No more trying to decode food labels.  No more guessing what is ok and what isn't.  We will provide a hands on approach to find foods for even picky eaters.

No more driving all over the city trying to find elusive foods that may be out of stock- wasting your time and money - everything you need is now in one place.

We invite you to an information session at Puzzle Pieces (401 Alden Road, Unit 2, Markham) on Thursday, August 14th from 7 to 9pm.

Whether you have just started a Gluten free and Casein free diet, are curious about it or if you are already on it and are simply looking for some more food options, please join us on Thursday.  Come learn more about us, ask questions and sample some of our yummy food.

To RSVP or if you have any questions, please contact Georgia at 416-508-7568 or at pathfoods <at> gmail.com.

We know first hand that scheduled times don't work for everyone so please drop us a note we'll come to your home to talk at a time that works for you.

My goal is to help you, so please let me know what I can do for you!

Reducing Problem Behaviors Workshop

NAVIGATING THE SPECTRUM

Providing Direction and Support

to Families of Children on the Autism Spectrum

August – Workshop: Reducing Problem Behaviors

Problem behaviors almost always accompany a diagnosis on the autism spectrum and seriously impact the child’s ability to progress through his or her intervention plan.  Behaviors that are inappropriate, disruptive or harmful to self and others are easy to recognize, but more subtle behaviors also need to be addressed.  Caretakers often find themselves overcompensating for the child by eliminating even simple demands or taking care to avoid situations that can escalate into problem behaviors. Inattentiveness, high levels of aimless activity, whining, tantruming and an inability to comply with commonplace demands interfere with learning and decrease opportunities to participate in family and social activities. Dealing with these myriad of behaviors can seem impossible, but they can be successfully managed through the use of Applied Behavior Analysis.  Parents, therapists and educators are invited to learn effective modification and reduction techniques that will address these behaviors and increase the overall effectiveness of the child’s intervention plan.  Topics to be covered include:

  • Overview of Applied Behavior Analysis: understand the concepts of reinforcement, punishment, extinction and antecedent manipulation, and how to apply these principles in everyday situations;
  • Understanding Behavior: learn the four categories every behavior fits into, how each is maintained, how to conduct functional assessments and analyses and how to use that information to reduce problem behaviors;
  • Behavioral Plans: discover how to address common situations that evoke problem behaviors such as interruptions and transitions, waiting and accepting no, as well as how to create child-specific programs.  Learn how to implement these programs across home, school and community environments.
