[H&R] Fwd: RHIZOME DISCUSS: Vito Acconci's 'Seedbed'

another clever "code poem" from Pall Thayer, this one portrays seminal performance artist Vito Acconci's "Seedbed" in script:

Re: [H&R] RHIZOME DISCUSS: Vito Acconci's 'Seedbed'

a little background on this, doesn't make sense I just realized if you don't know the original piece:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seedbed_(performance_piece)

Seedbed is a performance piece first performed by Vito Acconci on 15–29 January 1971 at Sonnabend Gallery in New York.

A low wooden ramp merging with the floor - it extends across the width of the room, beginning two feet up the side of one wall and slanting down to the middle of the floor. Acconci lay hidden underneath the ramp installed at the Sonnabend Gallery, masturbating. The artist's spoken fantasies about the visitors walking above him were heard through loudspeakers in the gallery.[1]

Marina Abramovic performed Seedbed as part of her Seven Easy Pieces in 2005.

[H&R] Bumbershoot 2009

Just looked to see if I'm mentioned on their site at all, and yes,
buried down in a press release my name is sandwiched between many
others:

http://bumbershoot.com/_pdf/download.lasso?filenm=2009-06-11.pdf

More later on what this thing actually is, but FYI, I'm showing in the
same room with Paul Miller AKA DJ Spooky. Stoked.

Sorry, needed the ego hit this morning. ;)

Love Y'all,

Re: [H&R] [NetBehaviour] [Access Space] Artist in Residence - call for proposals

nice call for residencies, in the UK, but for those of you on this list who might be running a new media center this is very interesting:

On Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 10:37 AM, Jake Harries <jakeharries <at> gmail.com> wrote:
Artists, composers, hackers, designers, engineers and creative
technologists are invited to apply for a 15 day artist residency at
Access Space during October and November 2009

Based in Sheffield city centre, Access Space is the UK's longest
running open access media lab. We use Open Source Software and
recycled computers to develop creativity, community, skills and
resourcefulness. We're a place for skill sharing, artistic endeavour,
creative expression and collective knowledge.

The Access Space arts programme is designed to promote themes of
Openness, including (but not limited to) Open Source, participation,
collaboration, open networks and the public realm.

The ideal resident will be willing to explore one or more of these
themes through their project and have some experience using technology
in creative projects. However, we are always open to interesting ideas
wherever they come from, including those exploring art's edges and
permeable boundaries.

For more details and an application pack visit
http://www.access-space.org/arts/AiR_2009.htm
Proposals need to be made using the application form.
The deadline is 5pm on Saturday 1st August 2009.

The Access Space arts programme is supported by the Arts Council of
England, Yorkshire.

[H&R] Fwd: Full Moon Screenings - Fandrich Piano Studio

Screening series of music related films starting at the Fandrich Piano Studio tonight!!

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Mark Ostrowski <juliuspudding <at> .com>

Subject: Full Moon Screenings - Fandrich Piano Studio

Hey hey,

Tonight July 7, 2009 is the first in a series of screenings at the Fandrich Piano Studio of movies about music and musicians. This is a free event open to anyone who is interested. The film tonight is Once at a Border by Tony Palmer. This film was made at the request of the Stravinsky Estate to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky's birth. Stavinsky's three surviving children talk about their father, and there are contributions from many friends and colleagues including Robert Craft, Jean Cocteau, Nadia Boulager, to name a few. There are also important performances of Les Noces in its original scoring, Petruschka, specially recreated for the film by the Bolshoi Ballet in its 1911coreography, and much else. If you can make it tonight, please bring whatever goodies you want and help spread the word. We will start around 9pm with an invocation by Mr. Fandrich. The next screening will be Aug. 6th with an update e-mail coming closer to the time. WORD!!!! We hope to see you and remember: "music is the best..."

[H&R] "Suite For String Quartet" July 18th 2009 <at> THE LAB & Record Release

C O L L I S I O N
The Lab 25th Anniversary Performance Series and Mission Creek Music Festival

Zachary James Watkins' Suite For String Quartet is written specifically for resonant spaces, interactive electronics, audience participation and string quartet. Suite for String Quartet has been in a continuous state of "revision" since Christmas 2004. For this current version I have developed a new tuning for all 16 strings. Each string of the quartet is retuned to an odd number partial of 60Hz.  Seattle artist Joe Grey will perform live improvised video animation.
Please feel free to explore the space, move quickly, move slowly, make subtle movements, dance! Listen to the unique characteristics of the space and the sounds being performed by the loud speakers, strings players and each other!

Theresa Wong, Cello
Emily Packard, Viola
Hande Erdum, Violin
Marielle Jakobsons, Violin
Zachary James Watkins, Electronics
Joeseph Gray, Live Animation

Jim Haynes manifests a broken minimalism whose magnetic drones give the impression of timelessness, when in fact the environment is quite active. Drawing from shortwave radio static, electric field disturbances, controlled feedback manipulation, and numerous textural scrapings, this engineering of disparate materials and media seeks to evince the unpredictability of decay, to manifest its potential for a rough hewn beauty, and to bare witness to its inevitability.

The Toilet creates his music by using recycled sound material, once used and then forgotten by previous musicians and artists. The old sounds are picked out from the bad conscience of music, torn into pieces by the Toilet to be reshaped into new sparkling music. This process of recycling creates a feeling of familiarity between the music and the audience as they pick up on recognizable sounds. Through the quick pace and sharp turns of the music feelings of nostalgia and long lost memories develops while before their eyes The Toilet  dances, a happy bloody clown, free from the norms, quilt and ideals of the society to whom he performs.

+++++++++&+++++++++
SIXTYHURTS 001

Charles Johnson / Zachary James Watkins split CD

The first release on the 60Hurts label, featuring recordings of the premieres of my piece Meet me by the pleroma and Zachary James Watkins’ Suite for String Quartet. Both pieces use just intonation tuning systems based on a fundamental frequency of 60Hz. CD’s are $10 post paid in the U.S.

Meet me by the pleroma (for violin, long string instrument, slentem, and electronics) reveals the usually inaudible difference tones that result from two pitches sounding together. These “sonic entities” affect our perceptions of dissonance, consonance, and tonality, and they are treated here as harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic material.

Suite for String Quartet has been in a continuous state of "revision" since Christmas 2004. For this current version Watkins developed a new tuning for all 16 strings. Each string of the quartet is retuned to an odd number partial of 60Hz. Suite For String Quartet is written specifically for resonant spaces, interactive electronics, audience participation and string quartet.
