Re: Re: Russian characters in Ecco

Hi and thanks. Looks like I've got it to work but not quite sure just what did it. I did try what you suggested in your earlier email and I think that resulted in the Russian keyboard being active the next time I started Ecco--meaning I had to switch back to English but now can easily switch back to Russian when needed.
This is the same setup I've had for some time in my Word program so I'm familiar with switching between the RU and EN icons on my taskbar. It does seem like your suggestion simply applied the same to Ecco. I assume the same process could be used for other languages in Ecco. Again, Thanks. Tony

Hi Tony,

The Advanced Tab language option has something to do with copying from other programs; perhaps it has influence on search and sorting in Ecco, but for just typing in Russian you do not need to use it.

All you need to type in Russian is
1) Russian keyboard layout (go to Control Panel - Regional and Language Options - Languages Tab - Details...)
2) Russian font (Arial CYR may be already in your system see Ecco menu Format Font More...)

Hope that helps,

Thanks, John. The instructions with this Tab seem to indicate that this change only applies to the language used in Menus or Dialog Boxes rather than the text you type in??

In Windows XP go to Control Panel - Regional and Language Options - Advanced Tab

set Lanuage for non-Unicode programs to Russian.

You need to login as Administrator (or use Run As...)

Does anyone know a simple way to type and copy & paste in Russian on Ecco? Thanks

The dreaded low memory condition

Well, after using Ecco since the first version without any difficulties, I finally got it. I'm sitting at work and can't book my patients and get the low memory message every time I try. Help!

I ran EM Reporter and it says that I have:
20,802 items
2,905 View lines
3,503 pointers
44,725 free

What gives? I thought the limit was over 65,000. More importantly, what do I do? Do I need to run Recover, or what?

Please bear in mind that I am pretty much a Ludite and not tech savvy.

Many Thanks,

Jonathan

Re: The dreaded low memory condition

You are right the total number of items in the file has the limit about 65k, but there may be other causes for the low memory condition error. So,

1) Relax, close Ecco, copy yourfile.eco and yourfile.bk1, yourfile.bk2, etc. to another location (e.g. make new folder SAFE). So that you do not worry that you may damage your files during recovery attempts.

2) Try to open any bk files starting from bk1 (Ecco menu File | Open and select All Files (*.*) in a Dropbox at the bottom of Open dialogue)

If there is no error message, save the bk file under new name and use it. (do not forget to make another copy of it in case the error appears again)

If there is the error message in all bk files,

3) Try to described in more details when the error appears (immediately after opening the file, or after any your action). Can you do anything after you close the error message? Try to remember what you have been doing before the error appeared first time.

Re: Re: The dreaded low memory condition

In my experience, this condition usually comes up because a particular folder/column is overloaded.  The folders/columns have individual size limits which are smaller than those for the overall file.

Again in my personal case, this tends to happen with columns containing info that I need on a running basis but not really for permanent archiving.  When that is the case, I can solve the problem by simply deleting the folder and making a new one with the same characteristics.

Best,

Frank Nettleton

Re: Re: The dreaded low memory condition

I get the same error from all back up copies.  The last successful action i took prior to receiving the error message was to set an alarm on an appointment.  I get the message whenever I try to drag a patient's name over to the calendar, and the message reads that the action cannot be completed, low memory condition detected.  I also tried typing in the appointment in the calendar and got the same message on the first keystroke.  Per JS's advice I have made a copy of all files in a safe folder.

I established columns in the calendar for things like cancellation and failure to keep appointments, and those all still work fine.  It is only when I try to drag a name to, or type on, an appointment time that the message pops up.  I can still input ticklers, and I can delete appointments, I just can't make any.

The error message only occurs when I do the above.  I would delete folders, but am not sure which one's I can delete safely and which would have a positive effect if deleted.

I keep a copy of my records on my home computer (encrypted) in case emergency and am a little worried about synchronizing the files in case there is something causing the problem at work that could spread to home.  Any thoughts?  I suppose that I could bring in a copy of the file from home and delete the work file (wouldn't lose much data), but am worried that the same problem would soon occur if the source is not addressed.

Is this something that I can address with the EM Advance Diagnostic Tool?  If so, how?

Also, is it likely that running Recover would help?

Thank you both for your kind responses, your assistance is greatly appreciated,

Jonathan

Re: The dreaded low memory condition

1. Recovery may help if there is an error in you file (and may not if one of the folders if full), however depending on how the recovery will go you may lose some setting in your file (not the data but maybe printing setting, some formats, etc.) so, the recovery is the last resort, nevertheless as you have a safe copy you may try recovery at any time. Just run menu File | Database | Recover... | Recovery contents of the currently active file. As you have a back up copy (in safe folder) fee free to try.

2. As it is the appointment that you cannot to add it is probable that your Appointments folder is full. The appointment folder may take about 16k of appointments. You may try to delete one or two appointments and try to add new appointment after that, if you can add an appointment after the deletion we get the culprit. If not...

3. Check the Date Stamp folder. Can you open it is Scratch? Try to delete it, if you have it, does it help? If not...

3. Run EM advance Diagnostic Tool, then press F5 (or menu File | Process Active Ecco File)  it will show a number of item in each folder (number folder may keep about 10k, check mark folder about 32k, all others about 16k)

4. If you find a folder that if full, post here which folder is full and someone or myself will give you further instructions (in case that is the appointment folder you may archive old appointments by running File | Database | Archive or just move all or some items to another folder, but that's the other story... please keep in touch)

I downloaded the most recent eco.ext, when I tried to drag and drop an appointment I got a message "Folder (appointments) items overflow! You should backup and clean your file!"  So maybe that is the culprit.  I tried to use the archive command without success, and when I looked the old records were still there.  What is the procedure to clean up the folder?  I need to keep at least the last 5 years of records handy.

Re: The dreaded low memory condition

OK. If you are using eccoext.exe all things are much more easier.

When running eccoext.exe

(Check the number of items in Appointments folder (the number in parenthesis near the folder name in the Folder window) if it is close to 16k)

Create new folder Appointments1 (or whatever you like),
Set the folder Type to Date (right click the folder name in Folder Window)
Run Merge Folder Values (right click the folder name in Folder Window)
Select From Appointments and To Appointments1 and press OK
Now your Appointments1 folder should show the same number of items that Appointment folder. (you copied your appointments from Appointments to Appintments1)

Put a rule ++:!:0:true in Appointments folder (right click the Folder | Auto Assignment Rules... | New
Run Check Folder Rules (this rule will delete all appointments from Appointments folder)
Now your Appointments folder is empty (all you recent appointments data are in the Appointments1 folder)

That's it.

Please report here your results.

Jonathan

Jonathan

Re: Re: The dreaded low memory condition

I think I follow.  Does this mean that I am essentially doubling the space for appointments by having 2 folders and that I will still be able to access the appointments to date which are now in Appointments1 folder?  Also, does this mean that I always have to run eco.ext (doesn't sound like it, I'm just trying to allow for any eventuality...for example, the hospital IT people doing any number of strange things like deleting anything they don't recognize)  I'm no longer at work, but will go in tomorrow to try this.

Thanks again,

Thanks again,

Re: The dreaded low memory condition

1. Yes, you will have a fresh folder for appointments so, you will be able to add about 16k additional appointments, and then you may create Appointments2 folder...
2. You don't have to run eccoext. You need eccoext only for cleaning you Appointment folder. However you may consider running eccoext as it has some nice and really useful features, look into eccoext.eco for details, may be you would like it.

(by the way, with eccoext you may run Ecco from an USB flash drive, i.e. without prior installation on your work computer, which sometimes is quite convenient)

Best regards,
JS
