Just out of curiosity, what is that X(1x) that the Ion manpage is
referring to? I don't have it on my system, I only have X(7x).

X(1) should be documentation of the X program in a user's PATH. X(7)
should be miscellaneous info about the X windoiw system. Since
Debian does have an X program, I think it's a bit of a bug that we do
not include an X(1). (It could be a link to XFree86(1) probably.)

I see. But doesn't it make more sense for ion(1) to refer to the
general description of the X Window System? Hmm, maybe not.

Indeed. I filed a bug (#230664) against xserver-common.

No, X is included in the xserver-common package which does not include
that XFree86. It should probably be linked to Xserver(1x) instead,
which appears to describe the X program.

mozilla remote window

Hi,

I'm running Mozilla Firebird and want to be able to open a url in a new
window from the command line (e.g. "MozillaFirebird -remote
'openURL(http://modeemi.cs.tut.fi/~tuomov/ion/)'").

If the only existing Firebird instances exist within WIonWS , I get the
error "No running window found.". If there is an existing Firebird
instance in a WFloatWS, it works fine.

Any ideas why this is happening or how I can work around it? I am
unable to open a new instance of Firebird as my profile is in use by the
existing one.

Thanks,

Jon.

PATCH: build fix for 20040131 on Solaris 8

Hi.

The attached patch fixes a build problem on Solaris 8 (for some reason
<X11/extensions/shape.h> doesn't include <X11/Xutil.h> which it requires
for struct Region).

Thanks to DRM, you know that something has been built in environment of
unspecified degree of security, from source you cannot check, written by
programmers you don't know, released after passing QA of unknown quality and
which is released under a license which disclaims any responsibility...

ion-2rc-20040206

This should be the last of the Ion2 release candidates, if everything
seems ok. The latest change is rather big and should perhaps be tested
more thoroughly than is possible at this short notice, but I'm still
planning to release Ion2 on 2004-02-07 (EET) -- at most 47 and half
hours from the time I'm writing this.

New ChangeLog entries:

2004-02-06:

  * Implemented a kludge to track "awaiting focus" state. This will
allow, for example, windows changing to full screen mode
immediately after mapping (instead of doing it right and setting
the properties before mapping) to be switched to.

2004-02-05:

  * WIonWS.newframe wasn't adjusting sizes of existing frames nicely.
  * Added extra include for dock.

2004-02-03:

  * Minor memory leak removed: drawing engine colour group name.
  * Some extra safety checks added in line editor.

2004-02-02:

  * Changed the autoconf script not to use \" that not all shells
    apparently support.

Hmm do you have any idea of what Ion's future could be ? How far are
you from your perfect window manager vision ? :p

Since I am using Ion, my productivity has grew up by 500% :p

Keep up the good job...

The next real step forward would be implementing the "vis" part of "vision",
a toolkit that would build user interfaces to the user's preferences from
a high-level semantic description of the program.

But that is too big a task for me to undertake, at the moment at least,
and really fighting against the windmills. (Just consider what happened
to HTML... people are too obsessed with pixel-precise alignment of
everything.)

As for Ion, the old TODO list at
<http://www.mail-archive.com/ion <at> list.rt.fm/msg00452.html>
still has some unimplemented entries, most notably a new workspace module.
Another new feature that I've been thinking about is a "scratchpad" that
should help with popups (xmessage notifications, IM notifications, etc.).
Additionally, I'll quite likely revamp the binding configuration system
again :).

So, yes, there are plans for Ion3.

Nooo ! You won't do that :p
