using awesome-client

(awesome 3.4.3)
I did a search for awesome-client in the wiki and couldn't find anything.

1. how to update a widget (let's say a text in mytextbox)
2. how to change the color of a tag? let's say make tag 8 red.

I tried something like this but it's the wrong syntax:
echo 0 widget_tell mywibox mytextbox 'test' | awesome-client

thanks!

Re: using awesome-client

You're using the 2.x syntax for awesome-client. Now it executes Lua code
in Awesome's Lua environment. You'd do things like

    echo "mytextbox.text = \"foo\"" | awesome-client

now.

Layout Help

Hi there. New user to awesome, and am trying to figure out something that I just haven't seen anywhere.

I want to construct a specific layout. In particular, this layout will have three windows. The layout will have a window on the right going top to bottom, with two windows on the left side. The end result should look something like this:

win1|Oth
------+er
win2|win

(hopefully that will show up clearly enough to show what I mean).

I know my window classes and instances, but I don't know how to construct this layout. Can it be done? If so, how?

Isn't this already implemented by default? Use your Mod key + Space bar
to cycle through
all the available layouts.

Re: Layout Help

You're right, it is, and I didn't state at all why I wanted to work out the layout.

Specifically, I want to set things up so that, when I log in, all my windows open up and go to their correct tag and screen, with the layout already done. In my case, it gets slightly harder, as the layout I've mentioned has to do with my IM and IRC windows. IRC is bottom left, IM conversations are top left, and right side is IM roster. The IM conversation doesn't open until after I double-click on someone's name.

So, what I'm wanting to do is be able to say to awesome to put the IRC on the left until the IM conversation window appears, and then that moves to bottom left automatically.

I know it's weird to ponder, but it is what I'm hoping to do.

Not at all, you can see some basic tips here:
http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/IM_tips#Gajim

To expand on the above behaviour and do anything more complex you'll
have to read up on layouts, columns, wfact and mwfact...

widget problem after resolution change

hi all,

i'm fairly new to awesome and this is my first post.

my problem is, that i have some self-made widgets (mainly textbox type)
with custom mouseclick bindings, but whenever i change my screen
resolution (e.g. for playing old dos/win games) the mousclick events
seem to disappear.
even after restoring the original resolution nothing happens after
clicking them. the widgets work just fine, only the mouse
support is affected.

a simple 'awesome.restart' doesnt fix this. i have to log out and back in.

strange stuff
