Actually the update I mentioned above is not the right one. I found the screenshot (attached) I took right
after I first noticed the bug. My clock shows 4:41PM on 1/31, so the following update must have been the one
when I first noticed the bug. Unfortunately intel/kernel/xorg were all updated at once...

[2011-01-31 16:30] upgraded libdrm (7.9.0.git20101207-2 -> 7.10-1)
[2011-01-31 16:30] upgraded libgl (7.9.0.git20101207-2 -> 7.10-1)
[2011-01-31 16:30] upgraded intel-dri (7.9.0.git20101207-2 -> 7.10-1)
[2011-01-31 16:32] upgraded kernel26 (2.6.36.3-2 -> 2.6.37-5)
[2011-01-31 16:32] upgraded xf86-video-intel (2.13.0-4 -> 2.14.0-1)

Psychon had me run some tests with drawing, the attached picture shows the results.

what he had to say about it:
psychon| ok, so when you tell it "paint green", it paints green
psychon| when you say "copy from this other image", it adds red

[awesome bugs] #591 - Rewrite awful.menu using widget layout

THIS IS AN AUTOMATED MESSAGE, DO NOT REPLY.

The following task has a new comment added:

FS#591 - Rewrite awful.menu using widget layout
User who did this - dodo (dodo)

----------
i don't know if this is still needed, but i wrote a rewrite of awful.menu

https://github.com/dodo/uzful/blob/master/menu/rewrite.lua

if you like i can generate a patch for you.

there are currently some dirty hacks in it:
- i doesn't found a possibility to get the full size of all widgets in a layout or the position of a widget in a layout
  so i 'hard-coded' it → https://github.com/dodo/uzful/blob/master/menu/rewrite.lua#L141https://github.com/dodo/uzful/blob/master/menu/rewrite.lua#L103
- i added code to the wibox.widget.background widget to set the foreground color (not really dirty i guess :p)
- xpm images causing errors → disabled: https://github.com/dodo/uzful/blob/master/menu/rewrite.lua#L494

new features:
- cleaner code (i suppose)
- better theme inheritance for menus
- menu entries are theme-able
- user can build his own menu entry constructor (so different menu entries are possible)
- only one wibox per menu will be used
- menu entry cmd function gets the menu and menu entry as arguments (so changing the menu or menu entry by
clicking it is possible)
- menu entries are deletable (even by user)

I haven't looked much into your code, but of course we'd still like something like this!
I'll try to take a closer look soon.

A patch would surely be nice.

[awesome bugs] #873 - get widgets geometry from layout

THIS IS AN AUTOMATED MESSAGE, DO NOT REPLY.

A new Flyspray task has been opened. Details are below.

User who did this - dodo (dodo)

Attached to Project - awesome
Summary - get widgets geometry from layout
Task Type - Feature Request
Category - Wibox
Status - Unconfirmed
Assigned To -
Operating System - All
Severity - Medium
Priority - Normal
Reported Version - git/master
Due in Version - Undecided
Due Date - Undecided
Details - i noticed some missing layout features while rewriting awful.menu.

firstly i wanted to set the size of a wibox containing a layout without knowing the exact size of the specific
layouted content.
the problem: getting a preferred size from the layout regardless in which direction the layout is going.
a solution: the method fit in every layout returns the preferred size when filled with invalid size (e.g.
-1, -1) (for example wibox.layout.fixed.vertical:fit(-1, -1) returns the sum of all item.height as
height and the max item.width as width )

secondly i need the position of widget inside a layout.
the problem: same as above. getting the position and size of a widget inside a layout without handling the
exact type of layout.

1) This does sound like a useful idea, except that we can't necessarily know the prefered size of a widget.
E.g. a imagebox which is allowed to resize its image only has a prefered aspect ratio, but not necessary a
preferred size. This could cause the computed value to be meaningless.

Why do you need this at all? Currently, the menu width / height is specified in the theme ("menu_width" and
"menu_height"). This might not be ideal, but it worked so far.

2) Why do you need a widget's geometry? This is not necessarily well-defined, because I could add the same
widget multiple times into a "layout tree" (e.g. why create multiple "spacer" widgets when you can just
use the same multiple times?)
If the wibox was already drawn, it might make sense to do something similar to wibox.find_widgets() to get
this. That way, no extra complexity is required for this in the layouts.
