Larry,
You might double-check the url you've given for the RSS feed, or
maybe try a couple of other urls in case there's nothing in the feed
you've supplied.
If the RSS portlet thinks its got nothing to display, it just
doesn't appear, which takes some getting used to.
Regards,
Nick

Re: Migrating from Plone 2.1.3 to 2.5.5 in hopes of eventually hitting 3.1.7

Since the 2.1->2.5 migration is well-tested / well-excercised code, the
problem probably lies in customisation you did to your site , or a bad
interaction of a 3rd-party product.

Think about 3rd-party products do you have installed and to what extent
have you customised this site.

Since customisation is much easier with Plone 3, as well as differently
done, I would suggest you try to de-brand your existing site as much as
possible before migrating, to try to help it through migration, then
rebrand it afterwards.

Hope this helps,
Nick

That's most probably not the Python your Zope/Plone is using.

That for the Python that Zope/Plone *is* using
(typically a dedicated 2.4.x these days) PIL
isn't installed. Change that ;-)

RSS

I beg your pardon and I understand totally.
And your right .. I'm totally new to this whole Plone environment.
what I'm doing is going into 'Manage Portlets' on left of home page.
From There I do 'Add Portlet' and select 'RSS Feed' and I enter URL you
gave me.

What I was expecting is another link on the left side of home pages that
would bring user to the RSS site. ??
Is it as simple as that or do I need to more ??
I also tried to add 'RSS News' but that then required an "Rss Instance' ??

RSS in plone 3.1

I don't know .. it's just not appearing.
I've closed my browser .. tried a different browser .. stopped / started
plone but no joy.
Downloaded that book but RSS stuff in that is more concerned with
syndication of folders etc,etc (book will come in handy though)
Also don't see anything in plone logs .. I'm thinking it might be
something different entirely .. like javascript or something that
displays the actual link ??

Re: RSS

I don't want to syndicate a folder .. I want to add an RSS feed to an
external site .. eg to let users read news from BBC
I add the portlet but it never appears .. is a valid URL

Re: RSS

As long as you give it a valid url for the RSS feed you should be good to go.  The RSS portlet has usually worked fine for me.  What is the RSS feed you're using?  The RSS feed simple doesn't show if there is an error retrieving the feed.

Might be nice in the portlet config if it told you it had trouble retrieving the RSS feed....

Maybe you've chosen a feed in a format unsupported by Plone's
RSS porlet?

I just checked on a current (testing) site of mine and while

http://plone.org/search_rss?portal_type=PSCRelease&sort_on=Date&sort_order=reverse&review_state=alpha&review_state=beta&review_state=release-candidate&review_state=final

showed up as expected

  http://www.python.org/channews.rdf

didn't :-(
The latter (claims to) be/is RSS 2 so I would have
expected it to work.

Feel free to file a ticket if there isn't any yet.
