Irish Translation

I have been working with an Irish language group who have been using
Plone since 2.0.4 to promote their activities.
They would like to assist now with an Irish translation.

I have downloaded the trunk from

    https://svn.plone.org/svn/collective/PloneTranslations/trunk

and sent them the .pot files from the i18n folder.

Some preliminary questions:

1. Is there recent documentation which I should be reading on the
best way to activate these files locally for testing and then to submit
these files back for inclusion in later releases?

2. Are there any other groups you are aware of that are already
carrying out preliminary work? I note that Gaeilge is not included in
your current list of translations.

3. Have you any suggestions on ways to isolate the 'public' strings so
that I can prioritise the strings which would normally be seen by
visitors to the site (Home, News, Events)?

4. Have I missed anything obvious?

5. Where should I report what I think is a bug in NuPlone /
LinguaPlone interaction? It requires flags to exist, even when they are
not set for display, and no Irish flag is defined in languages. I
patched it by adding the country flag (unused), but I guess it's the

This is a very good question and one that I've thought of in the past.
In the past, I've just used the old 'click-and-see' method of figuring
out which tags are visible in the public interface (even the main
editing interface) but it would be a very good thing to work out a
programatic way to figure this out.

/me waits in anticipation for any other 'wise heads' to make comment.

i18ndude tells me no entries for domain "plone"?

Hi all,

I'm still getting errors using i18ndude that suggest the domain
doesn't exist, despite that not being the case afaict:

datakid <at> thornbury:~/code/PlumiTrunkProducts/ATCountryWidget$
./i18n/usei18ndude.sh No entries for domain "plone".
Type i18ndude<Enter> to see the help.

datakid <at> thornbury:~/code/PlumiTrunkProducts/ATCountryWidget$ grep -r
domain . | grep -v
svn./skins/ATCountryWidget/country_widgets/country.pt:
i18n:domain="plone">
./skins/ATCountryWidget/country_widgets/multicountry.pt:
i18n:domain="plone">
./skins/ATCountryWidget/country_widgets/area.pt:       i18n:domain="plone">
datakid <at> thornbury:~/code/PlumiTrunkProducts/ATCountryWidget$

then after some more reading I tried the direct line:

datakid <at> thornbury:~/code/PlumiTrunkProducts/ATCountryWidget$ i18ndude
rebuild-pot --pot atcountrywidget.pot --create plone .
No entries for domain "plone".
Type i18ndude<Enter> to see the help.

nor did it work in the actual directory specified..?

I used

easy_install  i18ndude

tokenizer dies on bad indentation?

Hi,

I'm also getting errors on the PlumiSkin product:

http://datakid.pastebin.com/m50df73fe

is this because of an i18ndude error, or because there is some bad
formatting in one of our pt files that is causing the tokenizer to
die?

cheers
L.

Re: portal_languages negotiation scheme + zope translation machinery

Hans-Peter Locher, on 2009-01-27:

Hi,

I'm using portal_languages to control the negotiation scheme ( Plone
3.1.7).
This works for the standard Plone translations, as well as products
using i18n folders,
but not for packages using the zope translation machinery (locales
structure)

I've set portal_languages to use browser request negotiation, and set
the default language to french.

Using a browser set to english, the site will be english, except
packages using locales folders.

(If I manually set the default language to english I'll get the
english translations for these packages also)

Looks like the smae issue I described here:

http://groups.google.co.uk/group/plone-i18n/browse_thread/thread/34c29c15709320a2

I did not get any answers to that.  Workaround as mentioned there:
actually add an English po file in the locales folder structure.

--

The inclusion of an english po file, didn't work for me.
To change the language negotiation to our needs, I've overridden the
utility for zope.i18n.interfaces.INegotiator, which works very well.

Best regards

Look for files containing 'i18n:domain'. In core Plone products it
will be 'i18n:domain="plone"'; in the case of Poi it is
i18n:domain="Poi"; in other products it will be another string.

Also look for files with the string 'i18n:translate' in it; if none of
the templates contain that, there are no strings to translate so
i18ndude will not find any. (Well, there is also 'i18n:attributes'
and in python files you can have 'from zope.i18nmessage import
MessageFactory')

i18n:translate and utf-8 ?

Hi !

I would like a hint about usage of i18n machinery in an utf environnement.

I have a plone 2.x website, running well (thank you). I have a page template with let's say :

---
    xml:lang="en"
    lang="en"
    tal:attributes="lang language;
                    xml:lang language"
metal:use-macro="here/main_template/macros/master"
i18n:domain="mydomain">

<p i18n:translate="">Here is a test</p>

</html>
---

Using .po files, it works like a charm,

Now if I use utf-8 chars inside <p>, like :

<p i18n:translate="">J'ai la quéquette qui colle</p>

(of course same html tag, and note french accents in sentence)

This time i18n translation does "nothing"...appears untranslated...

Any hint, please ?

Cequi.

Javascript and i18n

Hi again,

Another question : how would you translate a sentence in a javascript (inlined in html template), please ?

Example :

    xml:lang="en"
    lang="en"
    tal:attributes="lang language;
                    xml:lang language"
metal:use-macro="here/main_template/macros/master"
i18n:domain="mydomain">

<h1>This is life ? </h1>

<script>
alert("How do I translate this string, please");

</script>
</html>

Thanx for your help

errors on the trac

Hey,

I noticed that on this page:

http://dev.plone.org/plone/wiki/i18nTeam

under the section that is called:

Information for Translators

the link to:
Existing translations

points to a page:
http://svn.plone.org/svn/collective/PloneTranslations/trunk/TRANSLATORS.html

that seems to be missing, at the very least, <html> </html> tags?

cheers
L.
