ArcWeb Explorer

Has anyone tried to use ArcWeb Explorer (a Flash/Flex based product

I'd like to hear your experiences.

Enviro Track at Boston Sprint July 18-22

Hello,

At the upcoming Boston sprint, we are putting together an
environmental track.

So far we've identified three potential focus areas.

1) RESTful web services for AT content types and vocabularies

We have many use cases that involved the sharing/integrating content
and vocabularies between systems. We think that REST is an
appropriate technology for such goals. Our work will likely take the
form of:

Service providers that adapt AT content objects to be exposed
via REST
Tools to consume RESTful content/vocabularies into our systems.

2) Map gallery

This Product will facilitate organizing a collection of maps with
associated metadata and preview images. It would include search/
browse tools, and a way for people to request new maps be created.
The Nature Conservancy has an app that they use internally that may
be used as a reference design or componentized into a new tool.

3) plone4artists - image content-type

The forthcoming plone4artists image content type will feature
extraction of embedded metadata. We are particularly interested in

question on plone system

This may seem a stupid question, but what is the product/item type
that the for... sections on plone.org such as the environment groups
area? I cant seem to find this out.

Is this workspace or something else?

David - is your PCDL built of the same system, or something else?

Just looking to see what other products may help for our site.

Re: RE: A Round of Introductions?

Yes, it is nice to see a little activity here.  I joined this list awhile ago but it has been largely inactive.  Our PLONE site was "built" by OneNW and we are quite happy with it so far and have received great support.  As we gain experience with it there are small and large issues which emerge.  It is good to know that PLONE 3 will have added features though I am still getting to know the features and limitations of PLONE 2. A key issues will be how the website can help us achieve some of a organizational goals such as increasing the number of household "pledges" to reduce CO2 emissions.  Traffic vs functionality may be a trade-off.

Thanks for the contact.
Unfortunately I only deal with our sites and setup, so cannot really
recommend any other sites.  I suppose it depends a lot on what you
want to do.

This is a very good point. I've addressed the "local" point in many
proposals, and I know people who have lost bids to poorer solutions
because of local expertise. That is, if you're a design firm in a
city where there is no Plone Consultant, and you want to stand behind
Plone as your preferred solution, you're likely to lose work.

A shame, when in fact design / usability experts tend to be far better
at handling customer meetings and requirements processes than your
average software engineer.

Mailing lists like this and plone-users, as well as the chat room and
conferences / sprints are good places to meet people who might be
willing, able, and available to help with Plone projects.

It is worth considering that most Plone consultants are booked up for
months into the future. We aren't entirely, but we could be this year
in the flicker of an eye. If you have any programming experience, it
may do you well to buy some books and/or seek training.

Another option is to look for help on lists, find someone eager to
help who doesn't have work, and give them a wad of cash to be your
expert. Send them to a Plone conference they couldn't otherwise
afford. It'll pay off.

EPA announces Energy Star guidelines to be developed for Enterprise Servers

FYI...

STAR(r) program.

Attached, please find an announcement letter regarding EPA's intent to
develop an ENERGY STAR Specification for Enterprise Computer Servers.
In
the coming months, EPA will consider the viability of developing this
specification through an investigation of the market and potential
energy savings. For further details on this effort, please take a
moment
to visit the ENERGY STAR Server and Datacenter Initiatives Web site at

www.energystar.gov/datacenters.

environmentally conscious computing

Howdy all..

This is just a *tad* off-topic, but I think people on this list will
be interested in the idea. cmcarlson pointed me in #plone today to an
initiative at EnergyStar promoting increased power efficiency in
enterprise servers. I noted, from my experience working for a large
hosting provider, that this is indeed quite a problem. Even with a
former NASA safety engineer - the person who said *not* to launch
Challenger - planning our HVAC and power, and being quite optimistic
at that, a $10M datacenter built in the 90s and purchased for reuse
around the turn of the century has trouble actually filling out to
even 1/3 or 1/2 of its' planned capacity due to advances in moore's
law and more compact chassis.

So, this is a pretty big problem, and these days when I encounter a
problem of this magnitude, two threads launch in my brain:

  * Is this related to a policy initiative that USACM may be
interested or involved in?
  * Is this perhaps related to the goals of an existing ACM SIG or
perhaps ground for a new one

This is a case where USACM may not need to waste its' time, but I
wonder about the viability of a Special Interest Group dedicated to
the generation and dissemination of information on environmentally
conscious computing, and perhaps even how it affects the bottom line
for the litter-unconscious consumer.

Are any of you folks interested in such an initiative? If so, follow
up with me and I will talk to people at ACM when I am in NYC this
month.

What is a SIG?

  http://acm.org/sigs/

  (or http://plonebeta.acm.org/special-interest-groups)

Cheers!
