Trying to clarify one thing:
We are talking about _inline_ validation here (aka while you type)
not validation in general, correct?

I'd be OK with removing inline validation but I'd strongly
object to disable form validation in general.

Removing password Generation

Hi,

As part of plip #10959 (http://dev.plone.org/plone/ticket/10959>) I've
been working an API for validating passwords so that plugins can have
stricter password policies than 5 chars.
Problem is that Plone allows randomly generated passwords so up until
now we've been considering to include an additional API for generating
a password that match the validation policy. This is problematic as
you could have many password policies co-operating so makes the api
pretty ugly.

So instead of all this I'm going to propose the following:
When a new user signs up, and we have "users select their own
passwords" turned off, then we use the password reset tool rather than
randomly selecting a password for them. We might have to extend the
password reset tool to send an email with different text to indicate
its a new account, not a reset.

This has the following affects
- we aren't sending passwords in clear text emails anymore
- if we need to set a password it can be a very long on as no one will
ever use it
- user registrations will have timeouts - if they miss the timeout
they can also go reset their password again
- won't change that admins can set a password if they want

Can anyone see any risks in this approach? (I can't think of any
except that it changes old functionality)

Do I need to create a new PLIP for this or can I put it under the
existing password validation API PLIP?

Indeed, the issue I fixed is only about inline validation.
The normal form validation is working fine.

I think this can go into the same PLIP.

And generally +1 to the idea. Sending plain text passwords isn't a
good idea at all.
