OmniWeb 5.11 final now available!

Good afternoon!

This is just a quick note to let you all know that OmniWeb 5.11 is now available!

	http://www.omnigroup.com/products/omniweb/download/

Here's what's new in 5.11:

	• Updated WebKit to match Safari 5.0.5.
	• Fixed a long-standing regression where bookmark syncing and bookmark checking wouldn't prompt to
allow connections to self-signed https servers.
	• Addressed some compatibility issues with future versions of OS X.

We expect that this will be the last version of OmniWeb to support 10.4 and PowerPC hardware: we think it's
time for OmniWeb to take advantage of 64-bit processors and the latest Lion operating system features, so
we'll be moving forward with those requirements in future releases. (Not to say that those future
releases are imminent or anything, just giving early warning!)

				Cheers,
				Ken

iPad Handwriting Recognition

I've heard three different theories on the lack of handwriting. One was that the capacitive touch screens
do not have fine enough resolution to accurately capture handwriting.

The second theory I heard was that Apple planned to introduce it in a later model. Get people interested now,
but hold back some features so you can encourage people to upgrade. Just smart marketing. Call it the
early-adopter tax.

The third theory I heard was that they won't include it because it's a tiny niche market and not the current
plan for the device. Some third party might add it, however.

And I still use Omniweb on my Macs. Still love the graphical tabbed browsing on the left. It is a bit slow
though compared to current versions of Safari and Firefox. If it were equally fast. I'd use it all the time.
Oh, there also a few sites that don't work well with OW either.

Omniweb and ipad

If Omnni Group somehow build a business case for Omniweb on the iPad, along with Omnigraffle, count me in. I
still cling to OmniWeb on my laptop and desktop. To replace my aging MacBook Pro with iPad, I need on that
platform a browser, an Open Office replacement, OmniGraffle, and preferably OmniOutliner.

Conversely, if I get all of the above without OmniWeb on the iPad, then I'll dump OmniWeb everywhere in favor
of Safari or Firefox (assuming Firefox ports to iPad).

Re: Bookmarking all tabs of front browser

Add my vote to this as a new feature for OmniWeb.

I have had several instances where I wanted to easily bookmark a bunch
of open tabs, or even drag them into a folder in my Favorites bar.
This would be useful when doing research on a particular topic (job
search, programming topics, etc.).

Regards,

Chad

Bookmarking all tabs of front browser

Is there still no way to bookmark all the tabs of
the front browser, collecting them into a folder?
I do use workspaces a lot, but still end up
wanting to save a bunch of bookmarks. For
instance, I was working with sqlite3 the other
day and had a dozen or so pages from the
documentation open in one browser. When I was
finished I wanted to save them in a folder. I
don't necessarily want it in a workspace, because
I was using them in other workspaces. And I'd
rather have them saved explicitly so I could move
them around, copy them to other browsers, etc.
This has become a fairly standard feature of
other browsers, and it really should be part of
OmniWeb.

An AppleScript solution currently would not work
because the only way I know to get the title of a
tab is to make it active, so collecting names and
bookmarks of the tabs involves doing
-- fldr is a new or selected bookmark
folder from elsewhere in the script
repeat with tb in tabs of the front browser
set the active tab of the front browser to tb
make new bookmark at end of fldr ¬
			with properties ¬
{address:(the address of theBrowser) as Unicode text, ¬
			name:(the name of theBrowser) as Unicode text}
	end repeat

Getting images to load

I can't seem to find the setting in Preferences that will cause
images to load automatically. I keep having to use Shift-Cmd-I,
which is a pain.

What have I missed out on?

My System: 20" iMac Intel (early 2006) / 2 GB RAM /
2 ghz /OS 10.5.6 Leopard / OmniWeb 5.8 /
Eudora 6.2.4 / Tex-Edit Plus /

Browser Speed and .Mac (sorry), Moble Me compatibility

My big complaint is that OW is a bit slower than other webkit
browsers. Some of this is my own fault as I keep many tabs open, but
ideally multiple tabs would not slow down the browser provided there's
sufficient RAM. I do love OW though.

One other limitation in OW is that I can't get it to work right with
the new Mobile Me site and e-mail. Any thoughts?

Why I favor OW

Lots of reasons, but the greatest one is that OW knows how to use
Tabs. The left-or-right drawer is perfect, and it stays white so I
can read it. Try reading the tabs on other browsers -- black type on
dark gray. Phooie.
