I originally subscribed intending to lurk and read some interesting information and discussion about java, struts, or MVC programming from sources external to my company, hopefully at a higher level ("architecture/best practices") than the struts-users list.
After subscribing, I spent a couple of months without getting much mail from the list other than advertisements for courses run by basebeans which I am not interested in. I feel we can't object to that since they're hosting the list and IMHO those posts are on topic. I did not get a lot of architecture related mail from the list, but the low volume is fine by me since my intent was to lurk and read the ideas that came across from others.
Recently however, it seems that the nominally "mvc-programmers" list has recently been repurposed as a support / communication forum for the aforementioned cours(es) which I'm personally not taking.
I would appreciate some clarification from the list manager as to what the purpose of this list is so I can make an informed decision on remaining subscribed or unsubscribing.
Thanks,
-Tim

Why the HELL are you people sending 5 meg files around on a mailing list? How hard is it to upload a file somewhere and provide a link to it, instead of making everybody suffer through a huge download. Some of us in this world are still using dialup and don't appreciate wasting our precious time downloading files we could care less about. Next week I will have a class on how to upload a file to a website, and provide a link in an email. Did anybody else have trouble opening this doc? I got an error from Acrobat which said something about not being able to decrypt the document. Vic, do you think you can send it again?
Thanks!

I went to the url below and saw the nice shpiel about the class. Since I also saw the "New User?" link I clicked on it and then clicked on the "Setup" button. I have a nice and fast internet connection so when I was clocking for a while, knew something was wrong. Sure enough, here's what i see in the Java console:
Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.3.1
Using JRE version 1.3.1 Java HotSpot(TM) Client
VM
User home directory = C:\WINNT\Profiles\gr10831.000

c: clear console window
f: finalize objects on finalization
queue
g: garbage collect
h: display this help message
l: dump classloader list
m: print memory usage
q: hide console
s: dump system properties
t: dump thread list
x: clear classloader cache
0-5: set trace level to <n>

So looks like I am running an old Java plugin? I *had* changed my Java_home/path to point to the jasic/JRockit(/bin) folder, as mentioned in your lab0, so somehow that folder doesn't have the updated plugin? (I used to only have Java 1.31 on my machine before I unzipped your jasic.zip.)
So where do I go from here? I thought I'd go download a new Java plugi, but it seems astonishingly hard to find a download site for just the plugin: seems like you have to download the entire sdk and you get the plugin as a free gift along the way..
If anyone has any advice at this point, it will sure be appreiated!
I will go download sdk 1.4.1 if that's the only way out... :(
Thanks very much in advance!

Hi, My name is Leon Liu, I am a developer/architect for ADP. I have been working with Java for 4 years.
We are currently developing some J2EE application, but we are not using Struts. In my spare time, I have used Struts to implement some small application. I want to get some advanced techniques of Struts, Tiles and DAO from this class.
I like skiing and skating (that's why I am living in New Jersey).
See you all on Saturday.
Leon Liu
My name is Dennis Stevens. I am a developer/project manager for my own consulting company. I’m currently involved a java development project using struts. This is my second struts project. I’ve been a java certified programmer since 1999 (?). I’ve been involved in development since 1985 starting with RPG, C++, Paradox, Perl, PowerBuilder, Notes and now Java. My first web development experience was about 10 years ago. I want to improve my understanding of how to use struts effectively. I believe that I’ve been able to brute force some things or just settle for a less than optimal solution in some cases because I don’t have the knowledge to fully benefit from the struts package. I am married with two kids and coach my son’s baseball team. My son also plays basketball and my daughter is on a competitive gymnastics team. I’m also training for a half iron man triathlon in May which I will do very slowly and hope I finish.
Dennis Stevens
