More about Exorcist vs. Repligard

[10:43] zillo: bergie: you know somehow what make repligard limited
to 2G
[10:43] bergie: 2 gig files? no
[10:45] tarjei_out: zillo: I would venture some kind of int/long
adressing scheme.
[10:45] zillo: bergie: you have aware about some kind of limiting
factor regarding repligard archive
[10:46] zillo: tarjei: have you more details?
[10:47] tarjei_out: zillo: no, it's just a huch, nothing more, you'll
have to ask ab I think
[10:47] tarjei_out: you can often find him at the samba-technical list
[10:47] zillo: tarjei: thanks
[10:48] tarjei_out: zillo: you could consider reqriting repligard as
a perl/java program
[10:50] zillo: tarjei_out: rewriting?
[10:51] zillo: tarjei_out: you mean "rewriting", yes?
[10:54] tarjei_out is now known as tarjei.
[10:54] tarjei: yes
[10:54] bergie: tarjei, zillo: http://www.bergie.iki.fi/blog/
repligard--your-days-are-numbered.html
[10:54] tarjei: AFAIK the c-code isn't the easiest to read
[10:55] tarjei: it shouldn't be hard to rewrite it using the new
javalibs.
[10:55] bergie: tarjei: there is already Exorcist that does exactly
that :-)
[10:55] tarjei: yes , but I havenæt seen anyone document a staging/
live or backupsituation

[10:56] bergie: tarjei: because we haven't set up one of those yet

I did a fix for large files support last Spring but it appeared by some reports that on some platforms configure test didn't work (it did on GNU/Linux though). Since then, Jukka moved repligard out of the core tree and forgot to att X_SAMBA_LARGEFILE_CHECK into acinclude.m4 and configure.ac for repligard.

The problem in fact boils down to the need to define proper symbols so that large file system support would be activated on a particular system. This is usually done by renaming regular I/O file functions to 64-bit ones if a particular symbol or two were defined.

Other than that repligard has no limitations on processing big files.(blobs). One possible place is in export routines where we get int string size for particular field but that is 2GB per fetched record field, not files.

Everything else is processed as stream.

BTW , new matadata stored in repligard table will contain data like approved
so there shouldn't be any need to make such *hacked* tools like current staging/live.

We should move it to midgard , or at least make it easy installable with midgard.
I am afraid that soon we will come back to 1.2/1.4/1.5 installation.

I haven't tried it, but I don't think there should be any major problems
with that (as long as the dependency jars can be compiled).

Yeah, I'm planning to be there. What's the latest schedule?

Writing Aegir modules howto

Hi, for those who want to partake in the development of Aegir now or in
the future here's the start of a guide on the subject of writing Aegir
modules.

You can find it here:
http://www.midgard-project.org/documentation/writing-aegir-modules

For those who feel like it, please comment :)

RE: Writing Aegir modules howto

Morning Tarjei,

Is there any work being done on the Midgard web server? I am having
trouble accessing parts of the site e.g.
http://www.midgard-project.org/documentation/howto/midcom/

Anyway, had a look through the documentation on writing Aegir modules.
Looks okay (did correct a few spelling mistakes though (looking
sheepishly)).

Just an idea - but what would be really useful in general for new users
would be a complete block diagram on how Midgard, midcom and Aegir fits
together (for new developers) and maybe a well commented 'hello world'
style example that is written as a midcom component with the Aegir code
as part of it - something that a new developer can literally cut and
paste and it will work, then dissect it and start developing on their
own?

Cheers

Mike.

In theory yes, in reality I battle both a possible huge project wrapup and, as
always, a bit on lack of money, as getting flights even to stockholm is not cheap.

So much for "cheap" airlines. The one I looked up so far require me to pay 110 ?
alone for the train tickets to the airport (with three changes en route), and
also not to mention the fact that I'd arrive around midnight in Stockholm. The
alternative would be an 9 hour train ride overnight :-(

"Cheap flights" Crap they are telling here.

As for all normal flights, they are close to 400 ? including the train to the
airport, which isn't exactly in my budget anyway.

So I think, that for my case I'll resort to the Internet for communication. Far
cheaper...

Live long and Prosper!

I think I should be at Stockholm-Skavsta about 11 p.m.
So I can wait for You and Smallone can pick us up.

Any travel is worth to talk about Midgard's future IMO.
There are issues and features which can not be easy discussed on irc channel.
