After a while of chatting with ian, trying things out etc. I finally found the 
cause:
I had to build xorg-server with the same mesa I'm running. As I never had 
problems using xorg-server built against 6.5.0 and runnign mesa-cvs, I didn't 
think of that before.

So from my side, no objections against releasing 6.5.1

I've got a couple of bugs that should be fixed first.  I'm working on 
them today.

X.Org uses tracker bugs such as
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6666 to avoid releasing
with known blocker bugs. Maybe this could work for Mesa as well.
