ANNOUNCE: Lumiera Developer Meeting, May 2010

Following our usual habbits, the next developer meeting would be on
wednesday, may 12 at 20:00UTC on irc.freenode.net in #lumiera

To anyone interested in attending the meeting, please confirm the
schedule or suggest some reschedule as followup to this message.

Few Topics (please complete):
 - LAC recap, any new people here? future events (Piksel summer camp)
 - Froscon application, we want to submit a paper about Lumiera and have
   a booth and backroom again.
 - Server Administration (John, can you make it to the meeting, do we
want to meet for the server stuff on another occation?)
 - Lumiera Workflow Discussion. I propose that we (developers) create a
document about "Lumiera internals as seen from Space", describing the
Lumiera design and toolset, in sensible details and easy words, so
that people get and overview about the tools they have to create a
workflow. In my impression former workflow discussions got stuck by
the lack of knowledge thereof, people just starting what they would
like to have but have no idea how Lumiera will work to stitch a
   workflow together.
 - ...add more topics here...

Maybe I'll be late some minutes, as I'm coming straight from work,
but basically Wednesday is OK for me.

Cheers,
Hermann V.

New newbies in tawn :)

Hello,

Thank cehteh on IRC to help my first step to try to compile Lumiera.

The bug now for me is about...
Before including <gavl/gavltime.h> one must include <inttypes.h>

But have to stop for know...

See you later,

Lumiera Workflow Discussion. I propose that we (developers) create a

I'd like to note that I and Mike Provost have drafted and detailed outline (oxymoron?) for the workflow that does exactly that. I was going to update it (for ASCII-doc format) but I realized that a number of the points in the outline have been addressed in some way (ie render engines, extensions, capture modules etc) and that neither Mike nor I had a full understanding of the design of the underlying software to describe our thoughts properly.

the oultine can be found in the repository: mob, under the branch: workflow in the /workflow directory http://www.lumiera.org/gitweb?p=lumiera/mob;a=tree;f=workflow;h=1fd1b9d225350064edc6a77069f1387adeb73d49;hb=refs/heads/workflow

I'd be happy the discuss the document and draft a revised version, perhaps one for development including the proper details about modules & code, and another for non-developers to describe our goal.

Actually it was your document which made me think we should explain the
tools better, that you can continue on the workflow (i only looked at
the .html yet). So far it starts as a 'wishlist' for features, to make
it evolve into a workflow document we have to acknowlege on what we can
and want to support and how the engine/toolset will work. Some things
there are already mentioned, some things are yet planned differently or
should be done differently (aka in a more advanced way) and some things
are quite out of scope for us for now. About quite a few things we
already have some ideas how the tools will work, this influences the way
you can do the workflow. So we need to provide you some understanding
how the Lumiera engine will work and what tools you have at hand to
create a workflow from it and maybe reiterate and redesign tools to meet
your needs too.

Generally I think this needs some documentation, as far I see we, the
developers, are in charge to equip you with that and communicate some ideas.

gdl-lum : gdl extention/"hack"?

Hi,

cehteh, told me that Ubuntu 10.4 gdl 2.30.0-1 should be good and no
need yours (lumiera one) but don't you forgot gld-lum? is it a lumiera
gld extention/"hack"? Can I compile only this part? Using scons?

Thanks,
Serge S.

Hi Serge,

first of all -- thanks for trying to compile lumiera on Ubuntu 10.4 !

Let me just explain the situation with the Gnome Docking Library. Formerly,
this was intended to become a "Gnome Design Library" and was closely coupled
to the GTK Interface builder and the Gnome Desktop. But this plan somewhat
stalled, and then other developers, most notably from the Anjuta project
recognized some features very usable for building advanced GUIs. If I
recall correct, at that time also our GUI developer, Joel Holdsworth
joined this effort and helped to remove the heavyweight dependencies.
Moreover, he improved the behaviour of the docking windows -- and
this is what we rely on in the current lumiera GUI.

These improvements are sort of "official", i.e. they went back into
mainline and should be included in any lib GDL starting with 2.27.1

Now, as Debian (stable) is our reference system, and Lenny still has GDL 0.7,
as an interims solution we created a custom package based on the code level
we rely on. This package is called gdl-lum, so it can be installed alongside
with the "official" GDL.

Both build systems (SCons and Autotools) should check the version and just
pick up what's appropriate. Thus, you should be able just to compile Lumiera
with the GDL 2.30 which comes with Ubuntu Lucid. (And if this doesn't work,
we'd like to know....)

Cheers,
happy compiling!

Compile with Ubuntu 10.04 ...?

Hi,

Ok for gdl/gdl-lum...

Now, first error I've got with scons is about link.

Many undefined objets. The first one is

src/lumiera/main.o:(.data+0x20): undefined reference to
`lib::Handle<lumiera_displaySlot_struct>::impl() const::__func__'

The last one is

libs/liblumieraproc.so: undefined reference to
`lib::AllocationCluster::handler(unsigned int)::__func__'

Any way ? where these object should be defined (as compile/link mean) ?

Also, I become to make some things in the source code...
How git work about that?
How can I get new version from repository with my own version?

I'll read http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/gittutorial.html
but english is not my natural language (french is) ...

À+,
Serge S.
