Kino works perfectly with Sony DCR-HC27

Wow, i'm so impressed with this software! After downloading X
applications for windows, and failing miserably at dumping DV from my
camera, i booted into Debian (unstable, linux-image-2.6.20-1-amd64) ,
turned on the camera, and bada-bing, Kino found it!

I've only had a couple of crashes when making settings during grabbing
dv, otherwise much more stable than Adobe and Canopus variants.

I'm satisfied also with the conversion to AVI, works like a charm.
I recommend this software to everyone who just wants the software to
work, with a minimum of settings.

You guys have put a lot of effort into Kino, and you deserve RESPECT!

strange bug with ffmpeg / h264 dual pass

I tried exporting a video to the broadband quality 320x240 364 kb/s
H.264 MP4 single pass (FFMPEG) profile, and the resulting file is
exactly 0 bytes long.

this with version 0.92-3 on debian

Testing a firewire port?

Hi all,

I realize that this is somewhat off-topic, but I think that there's a
lot of knowledge here on the subject ...

The problem is as follows: a friend of mine had a perfectly working
setup on an AMD64 machine (which I installed), using Kino to capture DV
from his handycam through a firewire port.

Then, apparently out of the blue, importing DV wouldn't work any more.
He still had working A/V controls, so at first I started tinkering
around a bit in .kinorc - in which capture and export settings both
pointed to /dev/dv1394/0, while I had specified the following
in /etc/rc.local:

  mknod -m 666 /dev/dv1394 c 171 34
  modprobe dv1394

As changing the device node didn't help at all, and I wasn't there
myself (checking and operating the machine from a remote location), I
advised my friend to check all cables once more. He tried several
firewire cables and ports(! - read on for more), but couldn't find
anything wrong.

Today, I was able to come over and check the hardware myself, and right
away I spotted the main problem: the 4-pin firewire connector on the
camera had one of its tiny pins bent out of alignment, most probably as
a result of a not-quite-straight plug insertion. Bending it back was
easy.

Re: Kino1.0.0 very unstable

Hi,

Sorry couldn't get back to you sooner. I think you are right about the
ffmpeg (reapplying the patch did not work either). Anyways I am not
considering myself as an expert on this. If I understand you correctly
about the fileformat: it is a SMIL/kino file (extension .kino although I
previously mentioned SMIL). All of the fragments/scenes are dv files
from my Sony DCR-TRV310E (ancient digital Hi8 camera). This device will
default use PAL, but I know it can play NTSC recordings. (Living in the
Netherlands the PAL setting in Kino seemed most obvious to me). Hope
this helps. When you need more info please let me know.

Best regards,

Erik

dvgrab compilation trouble

Hi,

I spent half a day yesterday trying to compile dvgrab from source. I
didin't manage.

The error message ./configure comes up with is:
./configure: line 5956: syntax error near unexpected token `LIBRAW1394,'
./configure: line 5956: `PKG_CHECK_MODULES(LIBRAW1394, libraw1394 >= 1.1.0)'
which puzzles me, since libraw is installed, also from source and for
example libiec61883, which also checks for libraw1394 using pkg-config,
finds it.
I tried updating my pkg-config but that didn't help it as well.

My system is a Linux From Scratch which normally is very good for
compiling anything without troubles, so I'm really stuck here..

Any ideas anyone?

Best regards,

error in seeking dv files from windows

I have a bunch of 4 gb dv files, and kino will play the first half of the files just fine, but it always takes a dump when seeking, anywere in the second half of the file.  Is there a size limit in kino, of is there a problem with my files?  I used a windows program to create the files if that makes a difference.
Thanks, John

dvgrab - audio resample?

Dear All,

I hope I'm asking this in the right place - not sure whether it's a
support query, or a feature request!

Anyway, when capturing from a firewire camera (in my case, a Canon XL1),
the frame rate is allegedly 25 fps video and 48000 Hz audio.

However, in practice, the camera is lying - it seems to clock the audio
ADC at about 48009 (or so) Hz, so there are a few more samples per
second. As a result, the audio progressively lags behind the video,
losing about 1 sec per hour. [From my googling, this is apparently
quite a common fault; Canon are especially guilty.]

But, every application in the chain now trusts the header of the DV
file, and so the surplus samples are not discarded (or, ideally
re-sampled) - this means that playing back a .dv file in mplayer is
fine, but any form of transcoding will loose sync.

Is there a way to either

a)Correct the header information in the DV file that dvgrab creates,
such that the audio sample-rate is specified at the true value, rather
than the value it ought to be. (a user-supplied option would be fine here)

b)When dvgrab captures a file, throw away n samples per second of audio.

Thanks very much for your help,

Richard

no, but there are bugs, and the bugs vary by version. You did not specify a
Kino version.

AVI introduces quite a bit of interoperability issues especially when you
exceed 2GB and sometimes just exceeding 1GB.

Your best bet is to use ffmpeg or salvagedv.py (do web search) to convert the
AVI to Raw DV.

DV grab piped into ffmpeg

This may not be a devel Q --- but If I may I would like to ask

I am wondering if you could capture the raw DV and pipe it into something so that you save to disc a mp4 .

could you pipe a capture into something like ffmpeg? or mencoder?
so that you could - basically in real time - make a h.264 or mp4.
That is shoot for 15 min & 2 sec .
stop.
and have a 15 min & 2 sec mp4 of
say 320 x 240 500 kbps .
Is that possible , and if so - I would love to know how.

Thanks
