I've used octave (since switched to sage), but I once played a little bit with imagemagick in octave. IIRC, without any sort of plugins.
I'd presume that octave supports histograms out of the box.

Octave I think is a clone of Matlab - that should be fine too. :)

Actually there is a gimp-octave plug-in by elsamuko :)

I think Gimp would be the wrong tool for this.

You might want to use R (http://www.r-project.org/) for this sort of
thing which will also allow you to do a whole bunch other
calculations. It's a very powerful statistical / mathematical
programming language with great graphics support.

Note that since each pixel in general is a vector of 3 values
typically between (0, 1) or (0, 255), you can plot each channel
separately in R to give you the histogram or you can do other plots.

[Gimp-user] Histogram

Hi everybody!

I am fairly new to Gimp, but love it. I am a marine biologist and I would like to use this program for my
research. I do need to export the histogram values as I need to do some calculations (pixel count and
value). Is there any way I can do this? Thank you for your help.

Ok thanks to everybody, I changed the language from prefrences also if the Alexandre's post is not
completely visible.

[Gimp-user] SF-FILENAME for output files

I have a script-fu program which among other things needs to create an
output text file to go along with a bunch of image files it creates.
When I use SF-FILENAME in my script-fu-register call, that seems to want
to find a file which already exists (like a file->open dialog) instead
of a file to save as (like file->save as dialogs). Does gimp have
something like this?

Thanks

I really don't know *buntu* but in openSUSE:
<right-click> on script icon and then on the pop-up icon allows
  assinging a different icon.

Did you read Alexandre's post? He suggests just setting your lang pref in
gimp's preferences and not jumping thru the other hoops.

Because prior to 2.7, if you edit a XCF, and "save as" JPEG/TIFF/PNG,
the image is deemed saved and you can quit without being told you'll
lose your work (which is the case, think about
layers/selections/paths...). So now "Save/Save as" is restricted to XCF,
and if you want to obtain a JPEG/TIFF/PNG you have to export. I believe
there an exception to this, if the image is loaded from a non-XCF file
you can still "Save" directly to that format.

Thanks. That solves the problem. I can enjoy Gimp again.
