especially nice is that term from the license:

Maybe such doesn't do much harm, but such a condition is plain flat tasteless
IMHO...

[CinCV] Open Source

yes, it's probably (or absolutely) not correct to call Open Source the
binary of a source (wich is not open at all and not to mention this
binary is only for privative system)

i agree that opensource, more than a brand is some kind of revolution.
And we had to be carefull, when using this term, or we'll probably
lost that sense.

:)

Lat's wait one more year. Perhaps EditShare just need more time to
replace some proprietary code. Codec support for example.
IMHO they win much more by GPLing this code then lose.

"Plain flat tasteless", lol, agreed!

I just downloaded it and started installing. Their license is clearly not GPL nor anything similar. There are things such as "you may only use one software in one machine", "you may not copy it rather than make a backup copy", the usual copyright stuff. You also have to register at their site to download it, which makes me feel at least suspicious...

I mean, I hope they make it, but it certainly has that feeling of:

"oh, let's become open souce, it seems catchy nowadays, how do we do it?"
"maybe we put a link for people to download our software for free instead of pirating it?"
"seems like a good idea! tell peter to do that on monday. that'd be all?"
"yeah, pretty much! then we send a memo to the developers team. oh, and perhaps Ana, from the juridical department".

then the devs and the JD freak out, call a meeting and step 2 seems suddenly further than initially thought...

Perhaps, maybe. Why are we guessing at all, instead of reading a statement of
EditShare, which clearly points out what the situation is and what to expect?

True OpenSource is a kind of social behaviour, and what we witness here
is *not* social behaviour. Beyond that, well, we're left with guessing about
reasons and possibilities. Personally I consider that a waste of time.

Re: [CinCV] Open Source

The LW administrators have now started a new thread on this issue on their forums:

"Back in April 2010, we announced our plans to take Lightworks open source. We always said the first step
would be to make the application freely available so that a large community of users could start becoming
familiar with it. We are very pleased to have reached this first milestone. Now you can freely download the
most intuitive and advanced editor available. This is not a trial download. From here forward, you will
always be able to download and use the latest version of Lightworks for free.

Some time in the middle of 2011, we hope to reach our next milestone - releasing the source code to any
developer who wants to build upon what we started. We wish we were ready to do that now. However, before we
can release any source, we have several hundred thousand lines of code to review to make sure it's all
cleared for opening up. We are making progress but we are not there yet.

In the meantime, we invite you to get familiar with Lightworks, an Academy and Emmy award winning
professional-grade editor with over 20 years of history in the film and broadcast industry. Having cut
hundreds of films such as Pulp Fiction, The Departed, Centurion and Shutter Island, it includes a full
feature set of editorial tools -- from advanced trimming and media management, to stereoscopic support
and realtime effects including multiple secondary colour correctors. Lightworks has an advanced
effects pipeline, utilizing the power of your GPU. And with support for up to 2K workflows with realtime
effects, it is the most advanced editing application available."

This doesn't look that bad anymore. The question of license remains yet, of course -- but when they write
about codecs:

"A lot of posts ask about why certain codecs don't work with the free Lightworks Beta. Most of the time, it's
because the codecs concerned need to have a license fee paid to use them. We obviously can't supply an
unlimited quantity of something that costs us money. We are looking at ways to integrate or invoke Open
Source codecs - so if your codec isn't supported now, it may be in the near future."

They seem to have somewhat more "open source spirit" -- at least it doesn't seem anymore like they are going
to make money by making people buy expensive add-ons for everything.

[CinCV] New PPA for Ubuntu - Cinelerra 2.1.5CV

I created a new personal package archive (PPA) for Ubuntu Maverick and below. I significantly upgraded the debian folder to allow builds for recent version of Ubuntu. The packaged version of cinelerra is 2.1.5CV.

[CinCV] invitation to Fundry.com

Hi - I'm from Stateless Systems and wanted to invite you to join a new
crowdfunding application we've just launched called Fundry.com.

Fundry is designed around software projects, helping developers get paid
for developing new features, and enabling your community to pledge to
get the features they want. Win win.

You can find out more about how it works here: http://fundry.com/about

We're currently in beta so are reaching out to a small group of
developers first before we approach the wider open-source community.

Previous applications we've developed that you may have heard about
include retailmenot, bugmenot, trendsmap, and CushyCMS.

I hope you enjoy Fundry, and would be happy to help if you have any
questions or feedback.

Sincerely

Tamara Nguyen

[CinCV] Cinelerra

Does Cinelerra run on Ubuntu 10.10?
I don't want to screw up my OS by reinstalling this.

Thanks
