svndumpfilter: Premature End of Content Data in Dumpstream

Hi again,

Ok I got it to dump, but now I realized that I need to create multiple repositories not just one repository.

I have gotten as far as dumped revisions

Now I am trying to create dumpfiles.  I put the following in a command prompt:

“vss2svn-dumpfile.txt” | svndumpfilter include AlertDirector.root > Alertdirect-dumpfile.txt

And press enter and receive the following:

Including Prefixes:

‘/Alertdirector.root’

Svndumpfilter:  Premature end of content data in dumpstream

A AlertDirect-dumpfile.txt file was created in the folder but only 1K.

I tried it by following the directions, but when I put cat “vss2svn-dumpfile.txt” | … I got a message that ‘cat’ is not a internal or external command.   Directions from:  http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.1/ch05s03.html#svn-ch-5-sect-3.1.3

There is no information in the file.

Please help!

Thanks,

Keith

Malformed Dumpfile Header

Jewgenij,

1.  When I open the dumpfile I  see the same as you

SVN-fs-dump-format-version: 2

2.  I am using version 1.5.1 by vss2svn.

Migration complete

Hi, all.

I just wanted to report that I have successfully migrated my repository using the 2008-04-30 nightly build.  My VSS repository was about 500MB, representing the (off and on) work of about 8 developers over 13 years.  The dump file contained about 2900 revs.  The folders other than "orphaned" and "labels" were byte-for-byte matches.

The migration was loaded into an existing repository with a "vendor" tree without any reported errors.

I tripped over some of those "orphaned" problems which may have been addressed by Alexander's 0007 patch, but in my case they all turned out to be caused by "destroy permanently" and were disposable.  Patches 0001 and 0002 sure would have made the migration more enjoyable.

I performed the migration using a batch file script I developed for the purpose, based on suggestions from here and the wiki, adding in some of my own preferences about how I wanted to test.  I plan to annotate it and post it to the wiki for future reference by others.

Things I wish I had done differently:
  • Run ANALYZE using VSS 2005 instead of 6.0d.  This idea occurred to me only the day of the migration.  It eliminated many errors that slipped through with 6.0d that I was planning to "just deal with".
  • Interleaved the releases by date with the vendor branch.  My repository now contains rev 362 (2008) followed by rev 363 (1995) which could be confusing.  The effort may have outweighed the benefit, so this was a low priority.
  • Edited the dumpfile to make the developer names consistent.  (We used first name, then employee number, then first-initial-last-name at various times.)  Changing the "length" entry right before each developer name would have been trivial in the same search-and-replace.
  • Not spent so much time experimenting with rev-interval settings.  It didn't make enough difference to be worth the effort.
  • Migrated about two years ago.  We've already reaped significant benefits from the move.  But also...
  • Since I waited this long, it might have been worth waiting a little longer for Subversion 1.5 to take advantage of sharding.
A huge shout-out to Toby for your ongoing work on this product.  I know it's not something of personal value to you anymore, but please don't be discouraged.  Your efforts on the product are of immeasureable value for those of us who haven't yet crossed that bridge.

I plan to stay on the list to contribute where I can.

Revision History Lost

I have a fairly small VSS database (3.5MB, 2 projects, 1 user).  When I ran Analyze, it found no errors.

I'm using Vista Ultimate, in case that's significant.

When I ran vss2svn (0.11.0 Alpha 1), there was an abundance of errors:

* could not find ParserDetails.ini in /PerlApp/XML/SAX

* BUILDACTIONHIST:  2 of the form

Attempt to add entry 'XDAAAAAA' with unknown version number (probably destroyed)

at vss2svn.pl line 706

* IMPORTSVN:  3 of the form

ssphys: no file delta record found for check-in action (probably item did not retained old versions of itself)

Try `ssphys --help` for more information

FAILED with non-zero exit status 255

at vss2svn.pl line 1092

* IMPORTSVN:  1 of the form

Attempt to re-add directory '/' at revision 1, skipping action: possibly missing delete

at vss2svn.pl line 851

* IMPORTSVN:  478 of the form

Could not open export file './_vss2svn/vssdata/CA/CAAAAAAA.1'

at vss2svn.pl line 851

VSS Actions read        : 708

I then tried the most recent nightly build (30-Apr-2008).  It produced a much shorter list of errors (lines beginning with ## were added from command output):

BUILDACTIONHIST:

svnadmin load ran with no errors or warnings.

Unfortunately, when I attempted to compare different versions of files in the svn repository, only the head version had any content.  Earlier versions had log entries but no content.  When I looked at the dumpfile, it too seemed to contain only one version of each file.

Here is my vss2svn command:

       vss2svn --vssdir "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\Common\VSS" > vss2svn.log

And here is my svnadmin load command:

       set svnadmin="C:\Program Files\Subversion\bin\svnadmin.exe"

       set repos="C:\svn\OmniumVB"

       set dumpfile="C:\Users\shadow\Downloads\Subversion\vss2svn-dumpfile.dat"

       %svnadmin% load %repos% < %dumpfile%

Are my expectations correct (that I should see my revision history)?

Did I omit some key parameters?

Is there another version I should try (other than 0.11.0 Alpha 1 and 30-Apr-2008)?

Does vss2svn work with Vista?

Any other suggestions?

Path for renames during restore and renames during share

I have created this patch during our VSS migration. It allowed us to restore a full and complete SVN repostiroy with all data accurate after the conversion. No files had to be moved from the orphaned directory either.

Please let me know if there are any questions.
