[Trac-dev] Migrate Google Group to t.e.o

If development for the trac project requires a forum in order to make
various decisions, don't you think this type of functionality would be
beneficial if included for all projects using trac?

There is a plugin for this:
http://trac-hacks.swapoff.org/wiki/DiscussionPlugin
(haven't used it so not sure how good it is)

Why doesn't the project plan on adding a forum feature comparable to
Google Groups so all developmental communication is contained within
the trac system?

Personally, I had a tough time finding the Google Group and realizing
how much it is used for the development project. Apart from adding a
simple link to the navigation bar on the t.e.o. pointing to the Google
Group in order to make finding this place easier, I think integrating
forum functionality would be very useful for all types of projects.

See related ticket: #1835

What does everyone else think?

[Trac-dev] Re: Migrate Google Group to t.e.o

We actually used to host the mailing list at t.e.o (p.e.c at the time
IIRC). We moved to Google because the number of people on the lists was
simply too much for the server to handle. Just one of those annoying
realities of FOSS project management. I do agree that a mailing list
archive plugin (with search hooks) would be very nice to have, and we
could use it on t.e.o to archive these lists. Go do it! :)

One of the problems with forums is that each forum is another website
I have to remember to check for updates. With Google Groups I can
check all the groups I'm subscribed to through a single site. I'm
subscribed to 18 Google Groups, which I'm not particularly active on
right now, but I can still check the site once a week or so and see
what's going on. I certainly wouldn't be keeping up with those groups
if they were hosted on 18 different sites.

Also don't forget that Google Groups allows you to have each 'posting' sent as
an email. To me the Groups work more like a mailinglist rather than a forum.

Same here, I think I have never used groups to read/write anything, I do
everything through my Thunderbird. Works pretty well and no need to go
to spesific "forum".

Google Groups are nice since they provide both. For people who likes to
use web interface are free to do so. I choose to use my MUA
capabilities to handle group as a mail.

Altough I would definitely like to see possibility to comment wiki pages
without changing contents of page itself like you have to do now.

Since wiki is used for collaboration? So if you want to raise new issue
or feature, how to discuss about it? "Commenting" is one way to do it
and that's how it's solved in many collaboration tools.

Of course for Trac core development I don't see any restriction why
different RFC or RFE wouldn't be discussed here - it would be arhived
and easy to search later on...

I'd be happy to host Trac development at OLPC, including lists, web,
repos, or whatever else you might find useful to offload.

It looks like that GHOP thing is limited to the 10 projects featured.

And those 10 projects are already selected, particulary for reason that
they're easy to start work on.

If you look issues for example moinmoin, most of them are about
translations, usability, researchs, case studies and such. Not much of
"real coding". Trac is just not that mature yet.

Pfft! My i18n branch says otherwise!
