Users, documentation and so on…

Hi,

Attached below is a transcript of an IRC discussion Augie and I had
with a couple of users; ‘Kebianizao’ & ‘cjmason’. It was one of those
rare occasions where a user is not only confused, but concerned enough
to actually care to articulate that confusion. Good stuff :)

The transcript is in PDF form, as that was the only somewhat sensible
format I could get Adium to produce. I believe we touched on a few
important issues, but it's getting late here, so I'll just summarise
my conclusions:

1) We need documentation. Lots of it. Augie agrees.

2) We need to explain exactly how changesets are pushed to Subversion
and that it's a destructive operation.

3) We should explain that hgsubversion is a Subversion client, first
of all. Pulling and pushing from both Subversion and other Mercurial
repositories is not recommended. Even though it may work, it's
unlikely to work the way users expect it to.

4) There's a bug: »hg pull -u && hg commit -m whatever && hg pull -u«
will print out the wrong error message if the Mercurial commit
coincides with a Subversion commit. See the transcript for details.

5) More generally, it would be nice if we could figure out a
reasonable way to deal with such a scenario. Subversion branches
cannot have more than one head; should we require -f/--force to pull
into a branch with more than one head? Should -u/--update trigger a

Development activity and Python PEP 385

Greets,

I noticed in PEP 385 draft that the Python team is considering
conversion to Mercurial when the hgsubversion library has progressed
more, from early August. There has however not been any activity in
hgsubversion from that time. What is the status of this project?

Regards,

First, that's just not true - there have been some changes to
hgsubversion since then.

Second, there has been less activity than I'd like. Most of that is
the fact that I just started a new job, and don't have as much spare
mental capacity while I ramp up and get going on my new tasks. I've
got patches in the pipeline, it's just slower because I have had a
busy past couple of months.

Third, much of the low-hanging fruit is finished. The longer we go on,
the harder it becomes to fix bugs properly, as the bugs themselves are
often significantly more complex.

This project is far from dead, it's just lurking for now. That said,
if you've got any time and willingness, it'd be great to have more
people working on this!

Thanks,
Augie

I am the author of that PEP, and I've gotten back to working on
hgsubversion lately. Augie has just pushed a fix for an issue Brett
Cannon discovered when working with my conversion, and I am looking at
fixing more issues for both Python and Jython (who have said they'd
like to convert sooner than Python). Meanwhile, I've tested
hgsubversion on a bunch of other repositories in my regular use of
OSS, and it's been working fine.

Cheers,

Dirkjan
