Any other comments (beyound Guillaume Emont's interesting
work on using extra keys on the keyboard for fine control)?

Is this simple fix worth checking in? Would it help if I made
the time step a user setting in the configuration file?

Thanks,

Hi Vanessa & the dev team,

Can we have some kind of status update on the media scanner work?
Is there a public branch we can checkout?

In terms of short term work I have a couple of merge requests waiting
on Bundle Buddy, https://www.moovida.com/quality/review

Specifically a trivial change "Allow folder.jpg etc for cover art", plus
a more debatable one "[Bug 491073] Scanner ignores year in TV
and Movie filenames".

I also have an submitted patch to do with how the media scanner
records time stamps.

For medium/long term changes, some discussion on the forum has
made it clear to me that for some things Moovida needs more work
at the database level (e.g. better handling of the same video in
multiple formats).

Status of Moovida 1.0

Dear Moovida developers,

You may have noticed that there has been less activity around Moovida 1.0 as of late. This is because all of our resources are now focussed on Moovida 2.0 release, which will be a significant departure from our current version.

Since most development on Moovida 1.0 is currently suspended, it also means we have very little time to review requests, bug fixes and the like on Launchpad, and we will not be able to merge any changes in the short term.

Needless to say, we are working hard to fix the media scanner issues and other shortcomings for an improved and radically different next version.

We will keep you informed with regards to the specific actions Fluendo Embedded will be taking with Moovida 1.0., and how the community can move forward and keep contributing.

I understand this may be upsetting to some of you given all the efforts you have placed in contributing to Elisa/Moovida 1.0 in the past few years. Luckily, Moovida remains open source so you will always be free to keep using / playing around with the software that has conquered so many users since its inception.

Thank your ongoing support and all the great work you have done up til now for this Media Center.

Sincerely,

Hi Vanessa,

Thank you for the much more general reply (see her email today,
3 March 2010, titled "Status of Moovida 1.0"). I will reply there.

I had wondered why Moovida had "slowed down" since the end
of last year. This sounds very exciting (and a little concerning).

Could someone update the Launchpad page which currently says
"Moovida 1.0 series is the current focus of development ",
https://launchpad.net/moovida

When do you expect to release Moovida 2.0? It would be
helpful to know (even roughly) for those of use considering
investing time working on features or plugins.

More importantly, is the Moovida 2.0 development code available
publicly yet? Since this is the (public) development mailing list, it
is likely that people here would be willing to test it. If however,
Fluendo Embedded will be keeping Moovida 2.0 "private" for
now, that is understandable - but you risk losing volunteer
developers (especially if Moovida 1.0 stagnates).

I hope this means that in the interim critical bugs in Moovida 1.0
will still be addressed.

Could you explicitly confirm that Moovida 2.0 will remain open
source? Just to be clear ;)

Thanks,

Peter

Re: Status of Moovida 1.0

Hi Moovida developers,

I hope to address some of Peter's concerns in this follow-up email.

We hope to have an early version of 2.0 available publicly sometime this summer. However, it's important Moovida developers know that since Moovida 2.0 will have a completely different architecture, it will not be possible to reuse any of the Moovida 1.0 code in the development of 2.0.

Meanwhile, for Moovida 1.0, we cannot guarantee that critical bugs will be handled swiftly.

As for the concern of Moovida remaining open, Moovida 2.0 will be partially open, but not to the same extent as 1.0. For this reason the code for 2.0 is not currently available publicly, but when we will be in a position to share more information we will make sure to contact this list first.

I hope this helps answer some of your concerns.

Regards,

Vanessa

I'm pretty sad to read that. As a Free Software hacker, I will certainly
not continue to work, or even use, a closed media center...

Re: Status of Moovida 1.0

Hi everyone,

Sadly we can't reveal much about the plans for Moovida 2.0 until April (not that far though).

Regarding the OpenSource part I can already assure you that Moovida 2.0 will have a major part of it developed as OpenSource and, in some sense, it will be even more free software friendly than Moovida 1.0 was.

But there will be a proprietary part be for the graphical rendering engine which will be a competitive advantage with its feature set (you will see why by yourself) which will be given away for free as in free beer but won't be free software as in free speech.

Sorry for all the mysteries, we have fierce competitors that raised plenty of cash and we don't want to leak too much information too early.

Thanks for your understanding,

Julien Moutte,
FLUENDO S.A.
