To whom it may concern,

How are you?

I'm in the process of writing my math-work (grad. level), and would like to use Latex.
I do not know where to start, what to do, but have seen the beauty of the program.

What should I download, what to pay, etc., etc..

Please, advice,

Kind regards

Issues with ProTeXt Installation

Having only recently been introduced to the world of TeX and given an opportunity to try it out, I was naturally drawn to download ProTeXt as a convenient distributor. I have installed the self-extracting file which created a bunch of folders and a set-up file.
Unfortunately, when I pressed setup.exe for installation I was confronted with an error message

See setup.exe.log for details

The file read

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "protext-setup.py", line 298, in <module>
File "protext-setup.py", line 97, in __init__
File "wx\_controls.pyc", line 494, in __init__
UnicodeDecodeError: 'cp949' codec can't decode bytes in position 4-5: illegal multibyte sequence

So far the Internet haven't given me a clue on how to address this issue, and the error message to me is cryptic at best. (apart from the fact that it seems like something with Python...?) I don't think my computer is missing files, and so far those around me didn't seem to have such problems.

If you have any ideas on how to tackle this problem please give me a reply.
Help would be very much appreciated! :)

Thanks in advance!

Does proTEXt / TEX Collection DVD 2012 work with Windows 8 64-bit?

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have a question you hopefully can answer:

Does the TEX Collection DVD 2012 also with Windows 8 64-bit?

I use proTEXt. Will this work after installation?

Thank you very much!

Kind Regards,

Carsten Simmer

Vielen Dank!

Mit freundlichen Grüßen

Carsten Simmer

new protext on tug.org

thomas --

last night's mirror from tug.org into ctan gave us an apparently new
"protext.exe" without deleting what was there.

so we now have

-rw-r--r--. 1 ctan 34 1223854878 2011-07-14 23:11 ProTeXt-3.0-070811.exe
-rw-r--r--. 1 ctan 34 57 2011-07-14 23:11 ProTeXt-3.0-070811.exe.md5
-rw-r--r--. 1 ctan 34 1223854878 2011-07-14 00:00 protext.exe

it seems likely that the "new" file is just a copy of 3.0, size and
md5sum are the same.

can you explain how this happened. while an extra gbyte and a bit is
not a "big deal" nowadays, there's going to be a lot of spurious network
traffic because of this new file.

incidentally, there is a dead link from your name under "credits" in

Can't Uninstall Previous ProTeXt Installation

I inadvertently installed ProTeXt into the "Downloads" folder of my Windows 7 machine.  Wanting to uninstall it and reinstall it in the "Program Files" folder, I found that ProTeXt was not listed among the programs I could uninstall--presumably because it isn't in the "Program Files" folder!

Simply moving from the "Downloads" folder to the "Program Files" folder the ProTeXt folder produced by the installation presumably wouldn't do the trick; I assume--but don't know, because I'm computer illiterate--that this would leave unhelpful things in the registry and path.

How can I uninstall?

Incidentally, the file I used for installation was the third of the three on the Purdue mirror site.  The first and third files are listed as being the same size, but the third is called simple Protext.exe, whereas the first one has some numbers added to that name, and I see nothing that tells one how to choose between them.

Information regarding PROTEXT2.X and 3.X - ECCN

I am working on an internal request for your application PROTEXT2.X and 3.X . In order to attend this request, I need to obtain the Export Control Classification Number (ECCN). Export controls prohibit or restrict the export or re-export of certain specific products, technologies and services from the United States to designated countries. We inquiring if there is an export control classification number (ECCN) for the mentioned software.

In the event you don't have an ECCN, could please fill out and sign the attached document? That way we will be able to self-classify internally.

Thank you in advance!

"View DVI" error message

I have only just started using ProText so I admit that this problem is
probably of my own doing.

In TexMakerX 2.1 (svn1774) on a WindowsXP machine when I click on the
"View DVI" icon, I receive an error message. This is the message:

MiKTeX Problem Report
Message: Windows API error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

Data: C:\Documents and Settings\Gerard\and.dvi
Source: Libraries\MiKTeX\Core\win\winFile.cpp
Line: 477
MiKTeX: 2.9
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
Invokers: explorer/texmakerx
SystemAdmin: yes
PowerUser: no
Root0: C:\Documents and Settings\Gerard\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.9
Root1: C:\Documents and Settings\Gerard\Local Settings\Application
Data\MiKTeX\2.9 Root2: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MiKTeX\2.9

It appears to be looking for a file named: "and.dvi" when, at least in
this particular case, it should be looking for a file named:
"Report.dvi" which does exist.
