Can't Uninstall Previous ProTeXt Installation

I inadvertently installed ProTeXt into the "Downloads" folder of my Windows 7 machine.  Wanting to uninstall it and reinstall it in the "Program Files" folder, I found that ProTeXt was not listed among the programs I could uninstall--presumably because it isn't in the "Program Files" folder!

Simply moving from the "Downloads" folder to the "Program Files" folder the ProTeXt folder produced by the installation presumably wouldn't do the trick; I assume--but don't know, because I'm computer illiterate--that this would leave unhelpful things in the registry and path.

How can I uninstall?

Incidentally, the file I used for installation was the third of the three on the Purdue mirror site.  The first and third files are listed as being the same size, but the third is called simple Protext.exe, whereas the first one has some numbers added to that name, and I see nothing that tells one how to choose between them.

Information regarding PROTEXT2.X and 3.X - ECCN

Karl,

I am working on an internal request for your application PROTEXT2.X and 3.X . In order to attend this request, I need to obtain the Export Control Classification Number (ECCN). Export controls prohibit or restrict the export or re-export of certain specific products, technologies and services from the United States to designated countries. We inquiring if there is an export control classification number (ECCN) for the mentioned software.

In the event you don't have an ECCN, could please fill out and sign the attached document? That way we will be able to self-classify internally.

Thank you in advance!

Best Regards,

protext install problems

Hi,
Redownloaded protext.exe from another mirror. Still I get almost done with
the install and then it chokes. Here is the message in the log file.

problem: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex/bin\MiKTeX209-core-PS.dll does
not exist
problem: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex/bin\MiKTeX209-core.dll does not

"View DVI" error message

I have only just started using ProText so I admit that this problem is
probably of my own doing.

In TexMakerX 2.1 (svn1774) on a WindowsXP machine when I click on the
"View DVI" icon, I receive an error message. This is the message:

MiKTeX Problem Report
Message: Windows API error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

Data: C:\Documents and Settings\Gerard\and.dvi

It appears to be looking for a file named: "and.dvi" when, at least in
this particular case, it should be looking for a file named:
"Report.dvi" which does exist.

install problems

Hi,
Tried to install protext in XP pro service pack 3. I got the following
error.

problem: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex/bin\MiKTeX209-core-PS.dll does
not exist
problem: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex/bin\MiKTeX209-core.dll does not

problem: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX

problem: C:\Program Files\MiKTeX 2.9\miktex/bin\MiKTeX209-packagemanager.dll

The first time install almost completed. Then I cleared the directory and
tried again and it only made it about half way before throwing the same
error.

Re: protext Digest, Vol 69, Issue 2

Dear Lorien,

Re:

> I am also having this problem. I have downloaded the protext.exe file
but it will not extract. When I click on it and then click extract on
the screen which pops up I receive the following error:

> "The archive is either in unknown format or damaged"

> What could be the problem?

> Best,
> Lorien Hayden

I have experienced this problem many times, and have found that the
cause invariably was that the downloaded file *is* indeed damaged. A
simple way to check is to compare the size of the downloaded file with
the size it is supposed to have (the web page will give you the exact
size). At some point the download has (most likely) stopped. (Why that
happens is a mystery to me. But all one can do is to start over - from
scratch.)

I found that when I did the downloading using Firefox, it was able to
deal with broken connections much better than other browsers.

Hope this helps.

Best,
Shailesh Shirali

Installation

I have just re-installed ProText/Miktex from the "Tex Collection DVD
2011" and found the following:

1) it did not install GSscript nor GSview although I could install them
myself from protext\gsv directory.

2) I added my "d:\localtexmf" root to Miktex and found that it would not
built the formats for (Pdf)tex or Latex. When I removed my
"d:\localtexmf" (and added it again later) it did work!

Are these known problems/changes?

Brian Housley

Texmaker is not texmakerx or texstudio!

In a previous message, you said : "The problem was, that TeXMaker changed its name".
It's totally false.
Texmaker has never changed his name since his creation in 2003 : http://www.xm1math.net/texmaker/.
You make a confusion between the authentic texmaker and texmakerx which has been forced to change his name by sourceforge.

What sourceforge said :
mai 2011 :"I will take a look at the Texmakerx project. If they are in fact
infringing, we will definitely ask them to change their name, as it is not our policy to promote or host projects that don’t comply with the law. I’m sorry that the original author had to change his project, and I will be happy to reach out to them to see if there’s anything we can do to help set the record straight. ..." ( source : http://sourceforge.net/blog/another-lesson-learned-clear-communication-is-key/ ).
june 2011 : "Those of you using LaTeX to write documents may be familiar with a program called Texmaker. A free, cross-platform text editor specifically for LaTeX, this project has been around since 2003. From this project, a new project was forked called TexMakerX. While this was a completely separate project, and said so on their site, there was a lot of crossover and considerable confusion between the two projects." (source : http://sourceforge.net/blog/texmakerx-is-now-texstudio/ )

Note on the authentic texmaker homesite : "This program is the authentic Texmaker editor and there is strictly no relationship between this program developed since 2003 and another latex editor which uses intentionally almost the same name to trick users."

Two Problems with proTeXt (July 4, 2011)

1. The newest version of proTeXt switches the recommended editor to TeXMaker 2.1. But when I checked their
website (http://texmaker.sourceforge.net/), I find that I am immediately forwarded to
(http://texstudio.sourceforge.net/) because this product has changed names and has a newer version,
TeXstudio 2.2. It would be nicer to use the more recent version with the changed name (which was available
before July 4, 2011).

2. In the doc folder, all of the versions of lshort.pdf (english, french, and italian) seem to be old. The
English version there is 2006, whereas the most recent version at CTAN
(http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/info/lshort/english/) is dated April 6, 2011. It would be nicer to
include the most recent versions.

Otherwise the new proTeXt is nice. Thanks for you continuing efforts. I regularly teach our graduate
mathematics students how to use TeX, and I always have them start with the installations recommended by
CTAN. I upgrade my own installations just before I have them do this so that I can anticipate what they will see.

Latex version - Voluntary support

Dear Sir,

After lots of recommendation from my friends and teachers, I am about to download latex from your website and looking forward to learn and use it. Could you please let me know that the file "protext.exe" which we download from the website

comprises which version of latex? Is it Latex 2 or latex 3 ? And do we need to download the other two files namely Protext -3.0-070811.exe and  Protext -3.0-070811.exe.md5 as well which are available in the above mentioned website ?Will appreciate your reply on this. If it is latex 2 can you please tell me when can we get to see Latex 3 ?

Also I would like to to support your team voluntarily.

Thank You!
