Not sure if this has been previously been raised, but MiKTeX 2.6 is the last version to support Windows 95/98 and MiKTeX 2.8 (which I know has another 2 years to run) is the last version to support Windows 2000. While I totally agree with the idea that you don't maintain current versions on very old (and unsupported) operating systems, it does seem odd that the repositories are completely erased.
