MikTeX 2.8 installer freezes Windows 7

It was almost done with the install and was extracting when suddenly
Windows 7 froze up and nothing would respond. Even doing Ctrl-Alt-Del
did not bring up the
process manager. Had to do a hard reboot. Googled but couldn't find a
solution. Tried to install 3 times and same result. OS is Windows 7
Ultimate (64-bit). BTW I was able to install 2.7 without incident.

Including png graphics *and* pstricks diagrams at the same time

I have a document which I want to include png graphics in and pstricks
diagrams at the same time. What is the best way to achieve this? As far
as I know, I need to use pdf to use png graphics, and I can't do this
because I need to use pstricks, which can't be compiled with a pdf
driver.

This is not really a MiKTeX question, so asking on comp.text.tex would make more sense.

That said, you have two options.

1. convert the PNGs to EPS (e.g., png2eps)

2. use tikz instead of pstricks

If you have not already made the pstricks figures and don't need any
esoteric pstricks capabilities, I'd take the 2nd option.  If you know
pstricks, the switch should be easy.

The best solution is to use the package pst-pdf which itself needs the 
newest preview package, available from CTAN.

miktex looking for ulem.sty in wrong package

Hello,

It seems that miktex is looking for ulem.sty in the ltxmisc package (and 
installs it automatically), but it is not present there.  There is a 
separate ulem package though.

Synchronize your repository (menu repositories in the package manager).

Doesn't that happen automatically when updating?  (Just updated it today.)

After synchronizing, the problem is still present.  If I uninstall the 
ulem package, it wants to install ltxmisc to get ulem.sty.  I use an 
online repository the the version "27 July" (all seem to have the same 
version).

Are you using miktex 2.8 in a multiuser setup? Then you will perhaps
have to call the admin version of the package manager (or the
non-admin version). I just tried in a new single user installation of
miktex 2.8. and it works fine and installs the ulem package to get
ulem.sty.
