Another update wizard problem : cannot download the list of available package repositories

Hi all.

I exactly have the very same problem described by Pierre Blach here
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=10255638
on my laptop WinXP Home Edn Sp2.

The 'Cannot download the list of available package repositories' error pops
up when the update manager tries to get the list !! It also happens when I try
to change he repository through mpm ..

I even tried to uninstall and reinstall via the basic MiKTeX 2.4.2207 setup but
still nothing changed. It still nags me.

I also disabled the firewall and the antivirus software to no avail. I also tried
on different LANs but still zero effect.

But the weird thing is, as Pierre Blach noticed already a year ago, on one of those
LANs, the update went smoothly on another computer !!

How can I fix this ?

TIA.

In fact, it really happens randomly !! Yesterday it worked again (still with a disabled firewall)
and this morning same problems : the list of package repositories couldn't be downloaded !

What's wrong ??

Re: Another update wizard problem : cannot download the list of available package repositories

Hi again.

Maybe this update wizard problem should be considred as a bug and the Basic Installer not recommended even for computers connected to the internet till it's solved !

Can anyone tell me what's exactly happening juste after checking Internet and telling Next on
the Update Manager window ? Which server gets connected and so on ?

Bibtex8 recompile necessary - please help

Dear Miktex Users, Dear Christian!
I really need help: I am writing my masters thesis in chinese studies
using Miktex 2.4 with Jurabib and the CJK-Package for Chinese. Therefore
I have to use bibtex8. Everything works fine. The only Problem is that
some BibTex Entries are too long.

According to the cool people of the CJK-List I need to recompile biteX8
after increasing the value of ENT_STR_SIZE (in bibtex.h) to a value at
least bigger than 250.

I tried to download the source code of miktex 2.4 from cvs according to
the advice on the miktex website (using copy and paste) without success.
I always get the following error:
cvs [login aborted]: connect to cvs.miktex.org:2401 failed: A socket
operation was attempted to an unreachable host.

So therefore following advice would be incredible helpful:
1. How to access and download the source code (Miktex 2.4)?
2. How to recompile Bibtex8 (I have Visual Studio 2005 Express installed)?

Of course a precompiled new binary would also be fantastic.

Please help me, my deadline is end of the Month.

Thanks a lot in advance
best wishes

Markus

Yes, the instructions are incorrect. The new CVS host is:

miktex.cvs.sourceforge.net

> Of course a precompiled new binary would also be fantastic.

I will check to see if it is possible to increase the value in Beta 9.

Font problem

Hello everyone,

I am currently using MikTeX 2.5 Beta 8, and can't seem to get some very simple fonts to work. My document goes like this:

\documentclass[a4paper, 12pt]{assignment}
\usepackage{amsmath}
\usepackage{graphicx}
\coursetitle{}
\courselabel{}
\exercisesheet{\textsc{Assignment}}{}
\student{}
\semester{Semester 1, 2006}
\date{\today}
\begin{document}
%Insert text
\end{document}

Unfortunately when I compile I get the following error message:

This is pdfeTeX, Version 3.141592-1.30.6-2.2 (MiKTeX 2.5 Beta 8) (preloaded format=pdflatex 2006.6.7)  7 JUN 2006 22:39
entering extended mode
...
LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `OT1/cmss/m/it' in size <12> not available
(Font)              Font shape `OT1/cmss/m/sl' tried instead on input line 18.

LaTeX Font Warning: Font shape `OT1/cmr/bx/sc' undefined
(Font)              using `OT1/cmr/bx/n' instead on input line 18.

This makes no sense - they must be there? I checked the .fd file, and they're there! I tried refreshing the format files, but no luck unfortunately.

Any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated,

Dmitri ulyinov,

You can get the source files and compilation instructions from CTAN.

I have recompiled BibTeX8 a few times now and had no real problems. The
instructions suggests:

- get the djgpp GNU C compiler and DOS extender package and build
  BibTeX from the source code. The master site for djgpp is
  ftp.delorie.com.

Cheers,  Phil

I have never seen documentclass{assignment} -- it looks like this is a
local class (possibly used generally in your institution?) The fact that
you get theses errors even with no real contents strongly suggests to me
that the fault is with that class file.

My suggestion is to ask someone who is familiar with the class file.

On the other hand, if you have a nontrivial sample using that class that
worked previously with your former MiKTeX version, but not with your
present one, the simplest solution might be to return to that former
version
                       :-(     -->    :-)           !!

(this is obviously no real help, but for what its worth here it is ... )
