problem with latexit (blank output, no error)

Hello,

I have a problem with latexit (1.16.1) on mac OS (10.5.7).

I have installed tex on /usr/local/gwTeX/bin/i386-apple-darwin
and I have given this path in the preferences (I also have it in
my .bash_profile).

latexit runs prefectly, without error messages, but the output is blank.

The log file has no error messages, too, and if I go to

/var/folders/IO/IOe86tTKEkewWqQWAWcS-U+++TI/-Tmp-/latexit-1.16.1/usr/local/gwTeX/bin/i386-apple-darwin

I find the temporary files created by latexit; there is a latexit-1.tex,
which is perfect; then there is latexit-1-2.tex, which crops the output
of the previous one, and the result of the crop is a blank file.
I also tried to change the parameters of the crop
(\includegraphics[viewport = ...])

with no result.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

 	Leonardo

Have you by any chance set the colors to white text on a white
background?

You have also all the LOG files there… Do they explain a bit? Can you
send us the formula or some examples you tried? Which version of
LaTeXiT do you use? (I think early 1.16 was a bit flaky)

The version is 1.16.1, it is said it is the most recent; I tried many
formulae, from a^2 to more complicate formulae, and there are not error
messages neither in the window nor in the log file (the log file is
below).

In the preferences (first tab) you can set a non-white background for
the PDF preview…

I just tried: nothing happens; if I set green bckg and close and open
latexit, there is a green bckg only at the beginning: if I type some
formula
and execute latexit, there is no formula and the usual grey bckg.

Does the library of formulae set show your background? Do you see
there your formulae?

What you describe looks like some bug. The bug can be inside
LaTeXiT's preferences. You could rename that file (~/Library/
Preferences/fr.club.ktd.LaTeXiT.plist) to save it and put it out of
the way… And you'll have to fill in settings again!

Can you open this and the other PDF files in PDF viewers? What is the
result with XeTeX? Or when going the DVI->PS->PDF route? LaTeXiT 1.16
allows all this (and also to use other TeX distributions in the system).

One possible reason for a failure could be

> \usepackage[utf8]{inputenc} %useful to type directly diacritic
> characters

which might fail with old gwTeX (but /usr/local/gwTeX/texmf.texlive/
tex/latex/base/utf8.def is loaded). How is it when you comment this
line?

Could you clear your font caches, log out and log in again, and try
LaTeXiT again? *We* don't know when the font cache polluting bug was
introduced in pdfTeX. And when it's that bug you encounter, then
using XeTeX or DVI->PS->PDF should circumvent the bug *in a clean
system.*

Yes, if I go in the temporary folder where they are stored I find
the following:

- in that folder there are latexit-1.tex, latexit-1-2.tex and the
corresponding pdf files; the first tex file creates a 1-page pdf
document with the formula, the second tex file load the first pdf
file and cut it in a small pdf square

- if I execute (on the terminal) "pdflatex latexit-1.tex" I produce a 1
page file with the correct formula

- if I then exexute "pdflatex latexit-1-2.tex", I produce a small white
square with no formula; I tried to change the crop command in the latex
   file with no result

A strange thing is that before executing commands in the terminal,
latexit-1.pdf is also a small square, like if it has been overwritten by
latexit-1-2.pdf...
