Best GNU/linux distro for latex2html?

Hello;

I am thinking of trying GNU/Linux, and was wondering if there is a better
distro with respect to its support of l2h in terms of having the most
up-2-date package and bug fixes.

Would that be Debian by any chance? or are they all the same with this
respect?

I assume all the distro's will have just as good support for Latex itself?
Which Latex is considered the best or most used these days on Unix? I use
Miktex on windows.

thanks

TMP strikes again! TMP folder blues with latex2html on windows

Hello;

My PC crashed. But my data is on a good disk. So, no problem, I rebooted my
laptop, connected the USB disk where I have all my l2h installation, and
added the needed environment variables again, and reinstalled MikTex. Now I
am ready to reuse l2h I thought. The laptop is XP SP2 (home edition), but
the desktop is XP SP2, pro edition.

Even thought I think I got the same exact env. on the laptop (same Drive
letter, same environment variables), I keep getting this error below when I
try to run latex2html on a tex file. The problem seems to be that l2h is
looking at TMP somewhere else from where I defined it to be in the
configuration file. Here is the error:

"Note: Working directory is
Note: Images will be generated in G:\LATEX\TMP\l2h664

texexpand V2008 (Revision 1.12)

Loading G:\LATEX\latex2html\styles\texdefs.perl...
Error: Cannot read 'TMP\styles': No such file or directory

Reading ...
Error: Cannot read 'TMP\EE_409_HW7': No such file or directory
        1 file(s) copied.
"

I have defined TMP to be G:\LATEX\TMP, but notice that later on, it says
Cannot read 'TMP\styles'

Re: Best GNU/linux distro for latex2html?

Hi Nasser,

I would install something easy to maintain. A good package management
system is one based on Debian apt-get. This includes both Debian and
Ubuntu distributions.

However, any version _will_ work fine, it's just a matter of simple
installation and long term stability and usability.

I agree (I run Debian Lenny myself), Debian has much improved it's ease
of installation.

The critical point is the need of a good partition of the disk, with
good separation of the various system and user directories.
It is possible to just have one system partition and one user partition,
but I found myself better with a set of partitions respectful of the
OS's structure (/, /boot, /usr, /var, /tmp) and of the user's structure
(as a practical single user, I have /home, /ext -- what is downloaded
from non-OS sites --, /audio, /video, /images.

As fas as Debian is concerned, the development model is conservative:
the stable version is published after extensive testing and packaging
can be late with respect to development: e.g. TexLive in Lenny (the
current stable version) is texLive 2007, and 2009 has been published
last November (its is quite easy to install thes last version from tug.org).

A more up-to-date version is testing (code name Squeeze), which will be
the next stable version, but maintaining testing up-to-date needs a much
higher traffic than maintaining stable, not to speak of possible

Re: Best GNU/linux distro for latex2html?

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and will probably upgrade to 10.4 at the end of
this month.

I've had some problems with previous installs, mostly with the pnm*
stuff ... but that seems to have solved itself a version or 2 ago.
Ubuntu uses texlive which seems to be pretty popular these days.

Re: TMP strikes again! TMP folder blues with latex2html on windows

update:

The TMP error is gone. I had a file access problem.

Now it goes much further, but I am stuck at a somewhat familar error, but
not able to find the solution.

I get this error when I run latex2html on a tex file:

"Error: Cannot read 'img62.png': No such file or directory
Converting image #33
pstoimg.bat: Error: Ghostscript returned error status 16777215
pstoimg.bat: Error: Couldn't find pnm output of
G:\LATEX\TMP\l2h288\image033.ps"

I never seen error 16777215. I've seen this error below before. It seems to
be coming from pnmcrop.exe, please see error messages below. It seems to be
looking for files with names such as p2668.t01 in the TMP folder where
images are processed. But when I look in the TMP folder, I see no such
files, but ones extensions .t00 (next to .pnm and .ps files).

THe error message I've seen before was

"pstoimg.bat: Error: Ghostscript returned error status 1
pstoimg.bat: Error: Couldn't find pnm output of
G:\texmf\tmp\l2h1716\image002.ps"

And the fix for this was to make sure that GS_LIB environment variable
correctly to point to the ghostscript lib/ and font/ which I do now.

Re: TMP strikes again! TMP folder blues with latex2html on windows

Why not use some of the pnm tools directly from command line to make
sure they are working correctly.

In fact, if you have a source file try doing the same commands, if possible.

Hi Les;

Here is the output from running one of the commands on its own. I get the

I copied the command and run it directly. Here is the DOS window screen

update:

When I ran the GS command and then the pnmcrop.exe commands myself, I do not
see an error? But the same command seem to cause a problem when run from
inside pstoimg.bat?

Below I show an error for an image file as generated from l2h command with
debug on. Then below that I show the commands that I run from DOS myself.

No; the error is occurring whilst failing to create p2668.t01 ...
