ANNOUNCE: xtem X11-TeX-menu, release v. 4.16

Dear xtem users,

after the tests of the beta-version of xtem version_4 this is now
the final release as version 4.16 of

       "xtem", an X11-TeX-menu

which runs with the new Tcl/Tk/TclX (Tcl 7.4/Tk4.0) as well as with the
old version (Tcl7.3/Tk3.6) (yet we highly encourage you to switch to the
new Tcl/Tk/TclX release because of some desirable user interface
refinements introduced in this Tcl/Tk version).

Besides adapting xtem to the new Tcl/Tk we have done error corrections,
optimizations and new features, some of them are:
  - file and directory selection in one menu, directory creation possible now,
  - radiobuttons where possible,
  - double mouse clicks in select boxes replaced by simple mouse clicks,
  - improved error messages if errors are done in the setting file
    printing.vst,
  - creation of the TeXtool buttons in the main menu optional by choice of
    the local administrator,
  - last used size and position of the xtem windows can be saved,
  - printer driver dvilj is added to the setting files.

The setting files from older versions of xtem may be kept unchanged
(mkcommand.vst excepted), thus switching from the older version (3.12) to the
new release will be done easily.

You will find all files on our file server:

tmview update.

Thomas Moor (for the moment, QElis@...) has updated his tmview
DVI viewer programs for OS/2 and Linux. Note that the OS/2 viewer has
been renamed, to avoid confusion with Eberhard Mattes's product.

I've installed these macros as CTAN tex-archive/macros/generic/arabic.tex

They're not a big deal -- just a bit of innocent amusement ... but I
liked them and asked if OMS minded if I installed them.

HieroTeX.tar has been unpacked and its contents have now replaced the
directory fonts/hieroglyph

The previous contents of fonts/hieroglyph were a series of source
files, whereas the new release is a series of .tar.gz files. I have
discussed this with Serge: he has taken some care with packaging the
stuff, and I have installed the new version in the form he submitted
it.

Note that users who don't have access to gzip and/or tar can request a
.zip file of the CTANs themselves -- the archives implement a dynamic
.tar.gz->.zip translator.

I have also installed a link from language/hieroglyph to fonts/hieroglyph

I've installed this, unpacked, as language/coptic

I followed this link, and found some delightful Egyptology pages...

Downtime of ftp.tex.ac.uk

Yesterday (Sunday 8 October 1995), ftp.tex.ac.uk went down at approx
1615 BST. It was at least partly up by 1830 (but I was otherwise
engaged at the time and so can't say how much of it was working). At
the very least, activity was hampered until some time this morning
(Monday 9 October), when it sent me its last message to say it had
failed to do some routine task. The archive was working when I logged
in from Amsterdam at about 1130.

The problem was with the power supplies: the maintenance people had
been working on cooling equipment, and as a result the temperature in
the machine room where the archive machine sites went out of range and
the power switched itself off automatically. We lost a disc as a
result of this, which holds the scripts, etc., that the archive uses
in operation.

Our apologies to those inconvenienced by the problems.
