Open Help Conference

Hi all,

I'm organizing the Open Help Conference this June. It's a gathering of
documentation and support people from various open source and community
projects. There are already participants who contribute to projects like
Firefox, GNOME, and Ubuntu.

http://openhelpconference.com/

There are presentations the first day, but with plenty of time between
for hallways conversations. The second day has open discussions, ending
with an open collaboration session where you can get input from peers
and professional tech writers.

We also have rooms availabe after the conference for team sprints, if
you'd like to use the opportunity to do some face-to-face collaboration.

Would anybody from Asterisk be interested in attending?

Thanks,
Shaun McCance

Asterisk: The Definitive Guide -- Call For Reviewers

Hey all!

We're getting VERY close to having the first draft of the next Asterisk book,
Asterisk: The Definitive Guide ready to be sent off to production. We're very
close to meeting our target dates, but our review timeline is very tight. Only
about 2 weeks!

Each morning we're continuing to work on the book, taking in your comments,
reviewing chapters, testing dialplan and installation steps, and all that good
stuff.

However, we've been looking at this book since May 2010 and our eyes are
starting to get glazed :) We'd love for the community to have a look at the book
and offer some constructive criticism.

It's far too late to take requests for things to cover. What we have is what
we're going to get in for this edition. After we finish this book though we plan
on continuing to update it, so there will be a chance to take suggestions again
soon.

For now, head on over to http://ofps.oreilly.com and check out the book (updated
this morning). There are a couple of bugs in the OFPS software which are causing
comments to not be available after chapter 8, but we're hoping to have those
resolved by Friday. However, we do have this fancy mailing list that we can use.

Russell, Jim and myself will be monitoring this list for comments, and we'll try
and get all of them satisfied before publication. If there is a particular area
we're covering that you're an expert in, we'd love to have you focus on that
chapter. You can email me back directly for more information on what we might be
looking for in that type of situation.

Ya we've been noticing that so far. Feedback should be going to adam -at-
oreilly -dot- com since there is nothing we can do to fix the software :)

Thanks!
Leif.

Asterisk: The Definitive Guide (pre-order and public review)

Today the 3rd edition of the O'Reilly published Asterisk book took big leap
forward, by becoming available for pre-order, and public review!

You can find information about the book and pre-order it here:
http://oreilly.com/catalog/9780596517342

Additionally, you can sign up and help us make it the best book on Asterisk ever
by helping to review it! The review site is brand new and we may run into some
bugs and such, but this is a big step in the right direction. Check it out here:
  http://ofps.oreilly.com

Feedback and comments encouraged and welcomed! Note that the book is still being
written, so you may see some section blank.

Thanks!
Leif Madsen, Russell Bryant, and Jim Van Meggelen

SLA update

Ok, so I finally got asterisk trunk building in Astlinux... got the bug that was stopping SIP from working
resolved (17665... thanks Mark!)... and have 11688 patching in after some tweaking... which should
allow me to use SLA (and BLF) with my SPA-942's.

So I just need to get around to get around to writing and testing the SLA configs themselves.

Was going through the attachments on the bug itself, but it's a little cluttered and not clear which ones
still apply.

Looking to help contribute to the documentation...

Hi.

I work quite a bit with Asterisk as the lead developer of astlinux
(http://www.astlinux.org/). That said, I'm a programmer not a telephony
troubleshooter, but I can program and I can write so I figured I could
contribute a few things.

I noticed that some of the documentation is a little thin/sparse, and in
a few cases hasn't been updated since 1.2.

I wanted to take a few of the examples of things--such as e.164
look-aside dialing or SLA--and update those, enhance the examples, and
get them back into the source tree.

It's been said that the sample configs are getting a bit long and hard
to follow... That's true. So I've been thinking that we could fragment
them, and then instruct people how to use 'include' directives to pull
in the features they find useful (kind of like how sendmail.mc uses the
FEATURE() .cf files).

I also found that certain functionality is counter-intuitive, and might
need to be documented better (like the SIP stuff).

I'd also suggest the following. When the Starfish book was published 5
years ago, there were a lot fewer VoIP providers out there, so people
did analog or ISDN trunking and used SIP or skinny "in-house" only.
That's changed. Now a lot of companies (and some residences) get their
connectivity via VoIP trunking.

If someone would like to add a new dialplan feature but they need some
programming done to make that happen, then let's talk about it. I wrote
an app, for instance (WaitUntil... app_waituntil) that allowed
synchronizing to an exact time, from which I was able to write a 'time'
extension:

https://issues.asterisk.org/view.php?id=11487

https://issues.asterisk.org/view.php?id=16090

So, things that interest me that I'd like to see get done? Here are a
couple off the top of my head:

* Update and modularize examples

* Add new examples, such as ISN and e.164 dialing

* Dialplan based find-me/follow-me

* Simple call filtering

* Simple time-of-day routing (e.g. having your teenagers' phones ring to
voice mail after 10pm on school nights)

* More troubleshooting extensions (read back IP address of caller,
statistics on jitter, etc.)

* Unlocking the power of SIPAddHeader() from the dialplan...

but I'm open to suggestions.

Anyway, if you're a configuration guru, please contact me. I'm happy to
work with someone to get some rock-solid examples going and then get
them committed to the source tree for distribution. They can help with
the technical parts (the troubleshooting) and I'll deal with the rest
(driving bugs, etc).

Thanks,

-Philip

Are Asterisk docs available online?

Are the Asterisk docs available online anywhere?

I have looked thru the asterisk.org site, but I can't seem to find any
specific docs... just lots of forum posts!

Thanks

limit the concurrent number of calls

Hi,

I am using Asterisk 1.4.23.1 between our two offices where an asterisk box is installed in each office, we have a limited internet link between the office and would like to limit the concurrent number of calls between offices to 4. We are using IAX channel when a call is routed from one asterisk box to another.

Please advise how to do this

Regards

Atef
