Re: 2100 + Battery Rebuild = Fried Newton

Nice response!

I am pretty sure it is fried off completely. The loud pop sounds as you described: a cap that explodes in the
PCB. The fried smell is still present as ever. The Newt is not budging to power ups. Nothing.

Let this be a lesson to all: using rebuilt batteries can fry your Newton, subject to final testing I will
verify this.

Too bad, it was a mint 2100. So much time spent on it... getting it going. Very frustrating. Luckily, all of my
stuff was saved to the flash card which is now in my backup 2000 that is working great. But now I am out the 2100.

All is not lost! Afried cap in the external power supply can easily be
fixed. Even a fried cap on the mother board can normally replaced.
AFAIK the Newton PBC has no multilayer board, so even damaged traces
can be replaced. A fried cap is smelly and the acid (electrolyte) is
poisonous. They tend to leave badly burnt PCB and everything look
desasterous.

But that doesn't mean the the whole machine is dead. Sometimes all you
have to do is replace the cap and your Newton will be a happy camper
again.

Maybe we should stick with the original capacity for cells instead of
trying to get 3.5 AmpH Nickel Titan Plutonium cells into our
oldies ;-). I use 2.2Ah NiMH in mine and the Newton seems fine - but I
am starting to get a bit scared. Maybe I should replace the caps just
in case... .

is this a record?

The only way I can get my eMate to talk to my office computer is to use Slowdown 6 times. Is this a record, I wonder?

Try Virtual PC with Win98SE. It is SOOOOO much more efficient.

You are welcome. Are you ready for the next round of information to digest?

Are you talking about the router or the WaveLAN card in your Newton? If your Newton's wireless card has a
solid light, that's a good sign. If you're speaking about the router, that information is not important at
this point. Your goal is to configure, either the Airport card in your Mac Mini, OR your router for wireless
access using 802.11b (the 'b' is the important part).

If either of these are set for 802.11g or 802.11n (a.k.a. Airport Extreme or Wireless G (54G), you may have a
hard time connecting your Newton. You need to be able to configure them to accept an 802.11b connection.

Enterasys RoamAbout Help needed

I just acquired an Enterasys RoamAbout DS/PC Card.

Can someone point me to a site telling me what software I need for my MP
2100 to use it, and how to set it up? Also, is there any difference
regarding which PC Slot on the MP2100 to use, top or bottom?

Re: 2100 + Battery Rebuild = Fried Newton

Thank you, Matthias.

I might send you my Newton for repair, but I will take it apart and find the culprit first.

I think after this, I will never use a rebuilt battery pack ever again in a Newton. I just picked up a
rechargeable battery package by Sanyo called Eneloop.

They are one of the few rechargeable batteries that come precharged, and hold 85% of their charge after
sitting for one year, whereas most of the other NIMH rechargeables lose all of their charge after such a
period of time. They are 2000 Mah, and the package came with 4 AAs and 4 AAAs, along with a fast charger with
wall and car plug. I got it on sale at Costco for only $23. Funny, only a few hours prior to this I bought an
energizer package that only came with 2 AA batteries and had to buy another package of 4. These batteries
lose all of their charge after 1 year of sitting, and cost me $50. So I will take it back and stick with the
cheaper, seemingly better Eneloops.

Re: 2100 + Battery Rebuild = Fried Newton

I wish we knew what was going on. I've been using a battery pack that
I re-celled probably 4 years ago and one that I recently did.
But I have re-celled more than 50 eMate packs, and though I have
occasionally had a bad solder joint I have never heard of one leading
to damage to the newton.
In my efforts to convert a battery tray I have shorted out a battery
by piercing the insulation, the heat generated is enough for serious
burn. It never got into the Newt.

I am concerned about this exploding Cap problem.
I always expected that jaggies would claim the last newton.

Ryan were you using an official Newton power adapter?
