Re: Beginnner: Connect Newton 2100 to Mac..

Greetings,
What sort of Mac do you have? If it's old enough to have an IRDA port
you can beam it using "DIL Tester" or something along those lines - it's
available on the UNNA archive. Works like a charm for me - I'm using a
WallStreet PowerBook G3 running OS 9.2.2. Haven't been able to get NCX
running on either of my OS X Macs. Can't even get serial to work with my
WallStreet!

[OT] OS 9 help needed.

Hi again,
I'm still unable to connect either of my Newtons to my WallStreet
PowerBook running OS 9.2.2. I have followed the directions exactly as
outlined in the manual for NCU - I've even tried a fresh install of it.
Here's the situation: When I try to dock one of my Newtons (either one
- a 2000U or a 2100) it refuses to see the serial connection. I start the
computer with the device hooked up: Dongle into Newton, then Serial cable
into WallStreet and then into Newton. Turn on computer. Start NCU. Open
"Properties" - select "Printer / Modem" port. Click OK. Open "Dock" on the
Newt. Select "Serial". Try "Connect" - and... Nothing! Error message
given says that the connection was stopped because there was no response.
That's the same error I keep getting when I try to connect using NCX on
either of my OS X Macs. I don't think it's the cable because I have another
one and same story with that one.

Could both of my serial cables be bad? I bought them from a cable
wholesaler. Both have all eight pins as advertised and are straight. Is
there a difference between your average Newton Mac serial cable or do I have
to have some special one? I know the dongle works because my keyboard works
with it just fine.

This is really irritating. Any OS 9 gurus out there care to help a
novice out? OS X no problem. OS 9 and I'm lost!

Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Re: NewtWorks, footnotes, and MS Word

Can you expand on this? Is this a program called 'Footnote'? Where can I
d/l it? Is it for the Mac or Newton?
Thanks,
Lee

Do not build the target based on X11. X11 is not part of the iPhone
and so it is not part of the iPhone header files (they are different
headers than the system header files).

Einstein for iPhone must be built using the special iPhone version of
Cocoa, which is quite similar, yet not the same. You have to use UIKit
to generate the basic UI and emulator surface.

That's brilliant. I hadn't thought about it before, but LARPers
would be the perfect market for PDA-based gamin' materials.

Re: Beginnner: Connect Newton 2100 to Mac..

I don't recall that there was very much feedback to the list, by
either provider or consumer. There was talk of setting up a link on
UNNA at the beginning but I never checked it and currently UNNA seems
to be down.
Paul Curtis was one of the providers but we rarely hear from him these
days. When he visited me a few years ago, I made a copy of the card
he was using. It provides two services, it will it seems dock a
Newton automatically to the last dock setup you used and has a backup
of files for ethernet connection.
It also includes Newt Test, Nitro, NTox, NHttpLib, Bluetooth Setup and
Courier. These may be dated versions but should still work.
I have a few cards that I could set up if needed.

Re: [OT] OS 9 help needed.

Hello Scott,

using 'straight through' Mac serial cables you cannot get connected,
sorry.

The correct cables are those made to connect to Mac serial printers.

Kind regards,

Thanks! What kind of cable do you use to get the Newton to talk to a
USB port?

Re: [OT] OS 9 help needed.

Guru, I am not.
I wonder if 9.2.2 is the problem. When I had a beige g3 with 9.1.? I
had no problem with the built in serial and NCU. After I installed OS
X the serial port was not available in classic, however
Newten <http://stevenf.com/software/newten/>
did support the built in serial port.

Can you install an earlier version of OS 9?

While I think it is unlikely that both of your Newtons have a problem
with the Newton interconnect port, do you have a keyboard or any other
way to test the interconnect port? These had a problem with breaking,
you would likely feel some looseness in it if that were the case.

Look for NewTen, the OSX app.
