New to newton, need help with ethernet.

Hello all! I've been reading the list since I got my 2100 last spring. I got past the bootstrap problem with my
pismo's ir port. I got a 3com 3c589d pc card and put all needed packages on my newton. I couldn't dock with
pismo under classic or os9 or NCX. I then got a flash card with all needed software and tried it with no luck.
I've been over the FAQ a number of times can anyone help?

Thanks Robert

It took a little while for my order but it got through customs and
into my hands finally. Adriano kept me informed whenever I asked.

Thomas makes a good point though; it's vacation time in Europe.

Recell for Newton 21000

Hello,

I have a dead battery pack for my Newton 2100, and
wonder if there are any companies or individuals in
the United States that can do a recell for it using
2500mah NIMH Batteries. Thanks for any info you guys
can provide for me.

Bluetooth and internet sharng

I have my Pico card, drivers and pairing all done. File transfers
work great (shame we couldn't have the OS patched to include Blunt
etc: no more bootstrap). I am trying to get my Newton online and I
don't really care if it is via bluetooth or wifi, but thus far I
can't get either to work. If the is anyone on the list who has
success with bluetooth internet sharing, could write to me off list.
I have followed all the instructions on wiki to no avail. The
commands in the terminal seem to be the sticking point.

I'd appreciate any help,

Thomas

Am I stupid?

Sorry for my naïve questions but I am simply curious:

Please explain to me who has rights to Newton soft and hardware? When it
will expire, the patent?

Is it so that after some time the content of the Newton will be public,
content "written" or constructed by Apple?

John

Re: Am I stupid?

Well, I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure it is a copyright, not a patent.
Apple owns the rights to any software they created, others have rights to
software they wrote for the Newton.
As to who has rights to the software now extant, well, that is a gray area
in the best of circumstances. Some of it has been released as freeware.
Some is considered by many to be "abandonware", which is a whole 'nother
legal can of worms. Some is yet owned and controlled by the owners.

Copyright law as applied to expiration and public domain is yet another
level of confusion, but here is a link that might shed some light on the
subject for you.

No, you are not stupid, though sending test messages out to the list might
brand you as such in the eyes of some. ;) FYI Gmail won't display your
message as an incoming email until somebody replies to it. They consider
this a "feature". You can find it in the sent mail, though.

Looking at your message again, I am guessing you do not speak English as a
first language. If my idioms baffle you, please contact me off-list and I
will explain. Sorry about that.

Dale

Apple has the rights. If you have additional questions, consulting
a lawyer might make sense. Although I am sure Paul has some ideas ;~)

According to quick googling:
For works created after January 1, 1978, the duration of a copyright
is for the life of the author plus 70 years.

Without knowing the contracts that were made between Newton Inc and
Apple Computers Inc at that time, it is still pretty safe to say that
Apple holds the copyright to all Newton hardware and to all software
that came installed on the Newton at time of delivery. In addition to
the copyrights, there were also various patents filed regarding
technology that was first used in the Newton (one for example
regarding power saving, but I don't have the link handy right now).

I don't know when any of these rights expire, but I am sure that it
will not be within my lifetime. Even if they did, Newton hardware
features are pretty meaningless when compared to todays available
hardware. And regarding the software, even if it was public domain,
we still would not own the source code and were at the same point at
which we are now.

The only thing different would be, that we would not require a ROM to
run the Einstein emulator, but simply add the ROM as part of the
package.
