Re: So many questions, so little time

Hello,

[Also also, I'd like to take this opportunity to send a phat shout out to
the
industrial designer who created the eMate keyboard. I have an physical
abnormality with the fingers on my left hand which only lets me use the
pinky for typing, so I'm down to six digits. I have a much lower error rate
typing on the eMate than on a standard keyboard, I suppose because of the
reduced reach between keys. I just wish there was a way to use it on my
regular PC. ]

Not to talk you out of a Newton-based solution or anything, but there may be
another keyboard that would meet your specialized needs:

http://www.abilitynet.org.uk/myway/keyboard/keyboard/alt-keyboard.htm

[scroll down to the second keyboard pic]

Cherry is a German keyboard manufacturer that makes a compact keyboard.
This keyboard is the smallest PC keyboard I've ever seen seen that features
full-size keys. If you decide you'd like to get one, I'd strongly suggest
getting a black one, as black keyboards hide the grime better and, well,
they look cool, too. ¬_¬

Here's a small pic of the compact keyboard in both colors to help you
compare 'n contrast them:

Apparently, there's also a keyguard available for these (see the first link;

Newton users in the UK?

Hi there

I am interested to know the following:

1) Is there currently an active Newton User group in the UK? (NuuK?, Unuk?)
2) Has there ever been a Newton Convention in the UK? If so when was the
last one?
3) Are there any Newton users in the South West area?

Thanks
Andy

[PLEASE READ] List policy on message archiving, and preventing info-leak.

Every now and then, I'll get a message from some current or past list user
asking me to remove their NTLK post from the Internet for some reason or
another. It dawned on me that perhaps not all of you have read the list FAQ,
so I'll quote the list FAQ here:

---- (quote from http://www.newtontalk.net/faq ) ---
NewtonTalk is an open, public communications medium. All posts to the list
are publically archived in two places:

- On the NTLK website at http://www.newtontalk.net/archive/
- On the searchable MARC archive at http://marc.10east.com/?l=newtontalk

Once a message is posted to the list, it cannot and will not be removed from
any of the archives. For one, this would be altering the public record of
what happened on the list, and we wish to preserve this for as long as we
can. Also, MARC will only remove messages if ordered to do so by an
appropriate court order (threatening e-mails from lawyers will not get their
attention).
--- (quote ends) ---

What does this mean?

It means that if you think you might ever regret sending something to the
list, **DON'T POST IT.**

This might be that flame you just spent a few hours composing, or the fact
that your signature contains all four of your phone numbers, your home and
work addresses. If you post it, it WILL get archived, and yes, you will
probably have to sue me and MARC, not to mention archive.org, to get it wiped
from the Internet completely. This is probably a good rule to follow in general.

rtf in In/Out (and over Bluetooth)

Hi everybody,

As I read in http://messagepad.chez-alice.fr/Bluetooth/Bluetooth.html,
Bluetooth connection is supposed to be able to handle rtf files.
Actually I manage to transfer them to the Newton and eventually they
show up in InOut.

The problem is that I am not figuring out any way in order to "put them
away" or to directly open them "in InOut". In case they could be
needed, I have IC/VC and also Paper Stationery (but probably the former
is not even supposed to deal with rtf and the latter is used by Mail V
only, I don't know). Eventually I realized that also importing a rtf
through a "Fetch URL" leads to the same results: it shows up in InOut
but I can not handle it anyway. Actually, also exporting a formatted
document from Works to the Mac through Bluetooth, it was received as a
simple txt file in the Mac. So probably the real question is: how can
rtf be handled in InOut?

I know, rtf can be transferred to/from the Newton through serial and
NCU but still I was curious about doing it through Bluetooth or
FetchURL.

I have the feeling that either I am missing something *really* basic
here or it is not possible...

Thanks for any info,

Giulio

For the really basic

did you place check mark next to the item in the inbox?
then use the put away tag, I believe rtf would be put away to notes

The problem when I last tried sending RTFs over Bluetooth was that
they were put away to Notes as _plain text_, so they lost all of the
RTF formatting.

I think I was able to view 'em with formatting in the inbox, using
the Paper stationery. But as soon as you put away: sadness.

That's the trick isn't it. I have to say thought, with NPDS Watcher
clipping along, my server will stay online for weeks at a time. It's
pretty rare that it cannot recover from a freeze or NPDS crash.

Tat would be a very useful package - or an addition to the watcher
module. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of anything that does timed reboots
for the Newton. I wonder of it would be possible to use the interval
'uptime' ping found in the Tracker Client to perform scheduled reboots
via the Watcher... or pull it out into another package altogether?

Hmmm....

How about a driver to support the old mac serial Rebound!
appliances(sophisticated circuits) that reboot the machine unless it's

Re: Newton users in the UK?

Hi Andy

If you've checked out Victor's map, you'll see there are plenty of
Newton users listed in the UK, including a fair few in the south west.

There hasn't been a Newton convention in the UK in the past five years,
which covers my involvement with Newtons, although there are occasional
meetings of UK NUG (Newton User Group) in London, hosted by Ronnie
Simon (who will hopefully chime in shortly).

However, if you're after 20mb memory cards, do let me know :)

cheers

Russ (in West Sussex)
