emate 300

I'm currently using a MP130 with an extra 2MB memory
card. There's a emate 300 for sale locally at a very
reasonable price. It LOOKS like a decent step up from
the 130, but I'm having difficulty finding out exactly
what the differences are. The offical FAQ doesn't seem
to have much data on the emate.

From the picture, it looks like the emate 300 has a
built-in keyboard. What else is different?

Re: Mac Swap Meet

For the 2.5 years I lived in Rockville (just around the corner from
the Apple Pi offices) I never sprouted any time to attend any
meetings, much to my personal chagrin. 2.5 years in Albuquerque
didn't change that either (of course, the rather impersonal face to
the NMUG was a big turnoff, too). Now, after 2 years in LA, I've made
the commitment and I will be joining Woo Lee at the next LANUG meet.

Re: emate 300

From a user stand point Newt OS 2.1 makes a lot of difference. It
allows ethernet and NewtWorks.
It also seems a good bit faster than the 130. Display is quite a bit
larger. Be sure to repair the spring issue asap. Make sure that you
get a Newton power adapter and not a generic one. The internal
memory expansion is also a plus.
It is however significantly slower than the 2x00.

Re: emate 300

This is looking quite good. I found some information
about the built-in software -- that's cool.

Can you tell me more about the spring issue?

Do you mean internal memory expansion in addition to
memory in the card slot? If so, what kind of memory
can it use?

$25-$40 is where most of them tend to sell, IIRC. Low end if you're
feeling benevolent, high end if you're actually going to miss the thing.

Yes they are reliable and work quite nicely. I have the Ambicom
compact flash card (purple antenna) and a CF adapter.

That's not a standard.

I would look over at www.40hz.org for a list of cards that Eckhart has
working...

As far as how it works, I can't comment too much for windows. On the
Mac I can send files back and forth as well as installing packages
(Also need IC/VC). I can also send vcard to the phone from the newton
and vice-versa.

I am unaware of any "syncing" setup that works via bluetooth currently.

Also Sony/Ericsson phones have had an issue with GPRS internet access,
that has been a problem for Newton. In other words, I have setup both
the t68i and a t610 to get internet access from the the GPRS
connection, but in both cases these connections were frequently
dropped (especially in Mail V) do to an "echo packets" issue.

NewtSMS

Hi Guys, Is there any non-expiring version or [k] available for NewtSMS? It's probably the only UI
available for the Nokia CardPhone 2.0 on the Newton. Unfortunately, the version (1.03) that I have
expired 2 years back, and I have to backdate my Newton to get it working again. I've tried contacting the
developer (Stefan Auweiler), but it seems as though he's given up on the Newton and moved on...

Update on "The Puzzler"

Here's an interesting thing - I was trying something just now and it
wasn't connecting (DHCP failure). - you will recall that I have it
set to not disconnect immediately).

I did a reset and when it re-started the whole i'net connection fired
up live! It did of course disconnect when the delay time was reached.

I feel that this might shed some light on the problem but I"m not
sure quite what! Any ideas?

Ethernet Connectivity to a PowerBook

Can I connect my MessagePad 2K with a 3COM 3C589D card to my TiBook (1.0Ghz Gigabit Ethernet) running OS9? I
wish to connect via a standard/crossover ethernet cable, without using a 10Mbps hub. Thanks a lot!
