Re: Connecting a 2100 to a PowerBook through a WaveLAN Bronze

You might be able to just grab the NCU application and its extensions
and manually place them where they need to go - Mac apps are pretty
much self contained (eg they don't have a registry to spread
themselves through).

Often a Mac installer just copies stuff to places anyway - as opposed
to installing from a compressed archive (I can't recall exactly which
option NCU uses). Possibly someone on the list can mail you the
appropriate bits with directions on where they need to be placed . .
.).

Also you didn't mention if the two machines could 'see' each other at
all ? ie - if you start a webserver on the Mac can you get to it via
the Newt ?

So many databases...

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out which database program is best suited for
something I want to do. So far, I've found the following:

* Notion
* EBASE
* FilePad
* Leverage

(did I miss any?)

I've tested out all of those except Leverage; a $139 relational database
is rather overkill for what I want to do :-)

So, what I'm attempting: A list with many fields (easily 30), a variety
of which I may want to search or sort on (call it a half-dozen), but
just one list/table (hence no need for a relational database). I will
probably want to display a few key fields from all items (or the
aforementioned search result subset) in a list, or all fields, one item
at a time.

Based on that, any thoughts about which one(s) I should be using?

My impressions from trying to set up my list/database in the three I've
tested are:

* Notion: Couldn't figure out how to make my own list type, but based on
what I saw of the built in list types, it displays all fields in the
list all at once. Also doesn't fill up the screen on my 2100 - it

Re: I'm looking for videophone hack

Hemant,
Yes, that was the app I was searching for! Thank you very much!

I connected two MP 2X00s and also an MP 2X00 and an eMate. It works very
well for sharing a whiteboard between two (Perhaps more than two?) devices. I
wished that it would allow users to share other apps simultaneously (NotePad,
Works, educational software), but for now, it's pretty cool for what it does.

I tried to place some typed text and graphics from Works and NotePad into the
clipboard function and then paste it into one of the Newt's whiteboards.
Unfortunately, the pasted data did not transfer into the other Newt. Maybe some
day? Doesn't seem like it would take much to add some real interesting
functionality to this app, other than the existing stylus input. Any takers? Are
the Russian developers still around?

Another thing I noticed was that even if I drew sketches with thicker pen
lines, the mirror image on the other Newton was displayed with THIN lines.
Perhaps if I adjust the pen line thickness on that machine as well? Seems like this
should not be necessary to produce identical reults. I'll experiment more.

I am going to experiment with three Newtons, to see if multiple units can be
"networked" this way. We'll see what happens.

Thanks again, Hemant!

Nope, neither can see the other...though I'm not sure if the PowerBook should be able to see the Newt. The
Newt definitely can't find any other computers.

Email for older Newtons...

Hello,

This evening, while scrounging roadside junk for rummage sale/Ebay
merchandise. I ran across a NIB 56K modem (external). As wonderful a
find as this is all by itself, it gave me an idea.

I still make use of the first generation Newtons... my most modern unit
is a MP 110. It does all the tasks it was intended with one
exception.... it has no email capability. I was able to get hold of an
original Apple modem for it... in fact, two of them, but, unfortunately,
the email protocols seem hardwired into it, with no way to alter them.

Since I do not have a certificate number or certificate password, there
would seem to be no way to set up an email account, even if the system
they originally had set up with SprintNet was still in existence...
which it probably is not.

In any case, it seemed to me that there was no reason I could not set up
my own personal dialup ISP just for myself. I could use my DSL
connection for the Internet "backbone", and set up a modem on my home
phone line when I was away so I could phone home with the Newton, login
to my mailserver and download the messages over the phone line to my
Newton.

Aside from the normal difficulties in configuring a system to answer the
phone and setting up a mail server, I can see no reason this would not
work... but for one seemingly insurmountable difficulty. I don't know
how to establish a connection.

Does anyone out there know the mail protocols that are hardwired into

LaserWriter Select 300 and Newton OS?

I am not able to print to LW 300's on any of my Newtons (eMate, MP
130, and MP 2000). They do not print the text, only spitting out
blank sheets of paper.

[OT] Vancouver Mac dealers? Used Gear?

Anybody know of a good used Mac dealer in Vancouver BC?

I have a customer in that area that needs a powermac for Final cut pro.

I think a Dual G4 800Mhz or better is what she needs?

Thanks,
Marty

Well, you missed NewtDB, but I understand that the author is not taking
registration anymore, so it's a dead issue. I think it's the best of
the lot, except for being a bit slow on sorting if you have a large
database.

In Overview mode, tap the name of the field (underneath the area where
it says "Browser") and it will give you a pop-up menu to select which
field you want to be in the browser window. Apparently you can have
only two at any given time. You can do searches or just press on the
letters at the bottom of the window to navigate or select data. Other
navigation tasks are handle by the system arrows and overview button of
the Newt.
