Re: OT: iPod hard drive blue foam, does one need it?

Thanks everyone! So: motion control!

What do you think of taking a thin layer of cardboard and putting it in there for this purpose? I saw someone
tried that with the CF conversion others have mentioned here. I've got no foam!

I didn't try the old drive with a new cable, but I did try running diskutils on it on a Mac, Linux, and PC box, and
I tried Diskwarrior. Intermittently it worked and usually it froze the machine it was plugged into after a
brief interval. Putting in a new drive though immediately made the unit work reliably, so I don't think it
was the cable.

I'll have to take it apart and do a visual inspection of the cable then.  I
got an el-cheapo 32GB CF card that did the trick for a while before it
flaked out.  (iPod Photo)  It could be that the 60GB drive that was in it
wasn't the problem.  It's been "hard drive" flakey (according to the
minimalist error message that shows) for years - which is why it was given
to me in the first place.

When I took my iPod 3G (40GB) apart, I had a stupid attack and tore the
headphone connector cable apart … like I did a few years prior.  Given that
it's sporting its original HDD, I think that it actually had suffered from
HDD failure.  Guess I'll see what the prices on replacements are this
time…ugh.  Rotten design.

OT - Off Topic - Re: Pod hard drive blue foam, does one need it?

Since it is inside a closed case, it would have a hard time keeping the HD
cooler since it wouldn't have much of a chance to get rid of the heat. I'm
pretty sure it is there to protect the hard disk from rattling around in
your iPod.

Be aware that (at least in my experience) most "dead" iPod drives aren't
dead at all. Of seven seemingly dead drives I've run through both a PC and a
Mac hard disk test program, six were perfectly OK. The reason their iPod
wouldn't boot was because they suffered from data corruption in the firmware
partition. By now one of these drives has been running perfectly for months
in an iPod Dock Connector (aka iPod 3G) after I formatted and partitioned it
on my Mac and installed the firmware using the old Mac iPod Updater. Two
other drives did at least pass a one day test in iPods of the same model
after undergoing the same treatment. Which doesn't mean they aren't still
working. I've just not had the need to test them further, since the third
iPod has been working hunky dory since September 2012.

Cheers

Frank

in Newton-related post and are filtering posts based on their subject line,
allow me to humbly suggest to preface the subject lines of posts like this
with "OT - Off Topic - ".

NCX + Mountain Lion (again)

I'm trying to use NCX over a serial port on 10.8.4. I'm using build
1.4(45), and can get it to install packages and export (at least) Dates
data from the Newton. However, trying to synchronize or import results
in a crash. To whom should I send the bug reports?

Thanks,

OT: iPod hard drive blue foam, does one need it?

Dear Newton list,

Soon I'll have a Surface Pro (which should let me try out Einstein again)! But in the meantime I'm occupying
myself with the revival of an old iPod 4th Gen 20gb, which I suspected some other listserv members might've
done.

I opened the case and swapped out the hard drive, no problem, and the unit appears to be working great. The
blue "bumpers" that go around the drive transferred easily. But I didn't have a razor or other sharp, flat
scraper handy, and the blue foam on the bottom of the old hard drive just came apart when I tried to take it
off. The unit appears to work fine without the foam.

So I'm wondering: what does that foam do? Googling yields answers like "I don't know," and "It's important
for ariflow" which seems counterintuitive. Does anyone on Newtontalk know? If the answer is "well it
might marginally improve the life of your hard drive because it'll keep it a little cooler" then I will
probably just leave it; if the answer is "you're going to start a fire with that thing!" I'll try to find a
substitute for the foam.

Cheers,
Jon

FS: SER-001 in an unopened package

Before PCBMan rolled up his awning and pulled his shingle in for the last
time, I bought an extra SER-001. I could use the cash right now, so it's up
for sale. I don't remember what I even paid for it. Easiest and fairest way
I can think of is to offer it to the list in an auction. I'll update the
price as often as I can at <www.ispinn.com/ser001.txt>

Please email me off list with your best offer by 10pm Pacific Time this
Wednesday. Ties go to the first person.

Shipping will likely be an extra $3 to $5.

In the interest of privacy, I'll leave it to the winner should they choose
to announce who they are.

Good luck everyone!

Unable to put away downloaded package

Hey guys!

So, I'm able to get online now with my wifi card, but it seems I'm missing a package?

When I try to install a pkg that I've downloaded with the Courier web browser, I get this from In/Out -

"This uses stationary that is not installed and cannot be displayed. (application/vnd.apple.installer+xml)"

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Can anyone flash a Wavelan card for me for about $10?

Hi all,

I've asked this before and didn't get a response, but does anyone have
experience flashing the Orinoco/Wavelan Silver card's firmware to make it
into a Gold card? I would like to get my newt back online for some
e-mailing of notes, but the Silver only supports 40 bit encryption, while
my home network uses 128.

I believe you need a PCMCIA slot and Windows XP and the instructions found
here:
http://www.inertramblings.com/2004/08/05/hacking-the-orinoco-silver-into-an-orinoco-gold/

I could mail the card and a small fee to someone, if they would be
interested. I live in Canada, so local would be preferred, but
international would be OK too.

Thanks,
noah
