RE: exchange vs lotus q

But if you truly want a neutral, balanced analysis, Ed Brill is not the
source.
Just like you wouldn't bank on Microsoft for the same assessment.

Microsoft does have a decent email client that works well with Exchange
200x.

Otherwise, maybe the decision on platform has to come first?
Clearly if the people who support it are more proficient at Linux, then
Domino or another Linux-based application is in order. And I totally second
John's suggestion regarding SuSE OpenExchange if Domino is more than what is
necessary.

Michael,

Domino does have a Mac client; for the most part it's equal to the Windows
version. The main difference is that Java has not been implemented (because
the client can be run in Classic mode on a Mac, which does not handle Java
well.) So unless you need to do heavy IM integration there shouldn't be too
many problems. My company is 70% Mac and we manage just fine...

I'll throw my hat into the "years ago" ring as well. Among other things,
I've used a Symbol 1800 bar-code-reading Palm Pilot and Pylon to get bar
code data into Notes. That's not quite direct integration, of course.
Many readers will write directly to input-enabled fields, and just about
all of them will create text files, so you can run around your warehouse or
storeroom reading bar codes, come back to your computer, and have Notes
deal with the data then.

> Any tips on working with specific types of codes, such as UPC, etc?

The important thing to know about bar codes is that you don't have to know
a lot about bar codes. Any bar code reader should be able to decypher any
properly formatted codes you throw at it. All you need to know, if you're
reading the codes, is that you'll be getting a batch of numbers and
letters. The specifics of the format are handled in the device, not in
your code.

If you're *creating* bar codes, it's a little more complex because there
are some not-insurmountable but non-trivial issues of which fonts to use,
padding out your bar code in some formats, computing check digits, and the
like. You can roll your own solution, but it's well-troden ground. It'll
be much faster and cheaper to buy a solution. IIRC, when I was generating
bar codes, my company spent something like $100 on bar code fonts and some
pre-written VB code to generate the codes, which I then dropped into an

Re: exchange vs lotus q

Wow..... Oracle must be giving that stuff away - 'cause it's in a few
universities I'm aware of.

Unless you're going to have the looking at applications, I wouldn't waste
the time.

I use a powerbook as my primary system. The Notes Mac client is substandard
to the Windows client in quite a few ways, not just lack of java support,
and if you want to irritate their Mac population, go ahead and have them
use Lotus Notes as their primary mail system.

Macs using a browser against Lotus Domino for mail? Do you hate these
people? <G> Seriously, unless you know more about the Mac's, what browser,
what OS, don't even go there without checking it out first.

Sometimes Lotus isn't a good fit for an organization, and this sounds like
one where it isn't. UNLESS you're going to get them interested in apps,
you're beating your head against a wall.

Re: R7 Mac client, was Re: exchange vs lotus q

Depends upon the program. Most "unix" programs these days are written for
linux. Mac is based on BSD. Slight enough differences to make things
interesting and difficult. Apple also has an X11 system that will allow
some linux/unix apps to run under X11. I doubt that Notes will be one of
them.

Thanks everyone for your input it has been very enlightening.

First off they wanted me to go in there and put in the Domino server and
support it, after speaking to them and meeting the community, I realized
that is not in my best interest no matter what they might be willing to
pay. I am exploring the openexchange option, and I tested the outlook mac
client entourage, it worked OK but didn't find free\busy (busytime). I
hate to say it but I really think that exchange or openexchange is the
best option. They are not prone to change and don't like it! But need a
calendar\emaiil integration very badly, if it wasn't for the calendar
everything would be easy!

Thanks again for all the help.

We've been happy with Antigen from Sybari for years. But, Sybari was
recently bought by Microsoft. They claim they will continue support for
Domino, but I've heard that story before...

Re: Virus package for Domino

We use Trend Micro's products for ourselves and many of our customers. We
also support Symantec's products for another customer. Both work well.

Notes & Netware/NDS/Zenworks

Hello everyone,

We have a client that's currently running a proprietary email solution and
looking to migrate. Their direction is Groupwise since they are very
heavily dependant on Netware and NDS.

I'm Looking for any feedback on integrating Domino server running on Linux
into an environment that's heavy on the Netware/NDS/Zenworks side. There
already is a central directory managed via NDS and there's no desire to
maintain a separate directory in Domino. Is there something similar to the
Domino/Active Directory connector for the Netware world ?

Thanks in advance...

Bob
