RE: ipod classic

actually can anyone give an indication on how poor the battery life is. the
classic is meant to be over 30 hrs of playback according to apple re the
normal firmware, but what is it like with rockbox? i.e. are we saying its
half, or less, or maybe 20hrs?

I've been playing around with it for a bit. It isn't too bad. As
others have said, battery life isn't too great, but everything seems
to functional. Only complaint I have when comparing it to RB on, say,
a Clip+ is boot time. Clip+ is a couple of seconds and the iPod is
about 10-20 seconds (even with fastboot). Other than that, it's
actually pretty nice.

Re: ipod classic

Installing it yourself would provide that answer.

About half of it, depending on several factors. Possibly a bit better
with some patches applied.

Re: ipod classic

With so many different usage patterns, how do you expect us to answer ?

It also depends on how your music is encoded, not including any plugins you might utilise.
To correctly assess all of this, it is required that you put some effort in to learning how this setup fits
your needs.
Now, backing up a iPod Classic is fully possible, even with today's inflated hard drive-prices.

Hope you will benefit from the Rockbox firmware on your iPod.

RE: ipod classic

I was not asking about how much specific battery life i might get, as this
will of course depend on my usage patterns.
i was asking about battery life on the ipod classic with rockbox vs. the
ipod classic normal firmware, 'all things being equal'.
this is a reasonable question. it goes to understanding how much less one
can expect when using rockox so i can understand if it is worth buying an
ipod classic.
The question has been answered now... it has been suggested that about half
the battery life is a reasonable expectation all things being equal.
FYI i will be mostly playing mp3, mp4, aac and ogg files and that's about
it.
I am used to a sandisk sansa fuse with rockbox which has recently failed so
i need a new player - and am trying to decide whether to get another fuse or
an ipod classic and see how that goes.

creating voice files

Hi list,
actually i am not able to create voice files by using RB utility.
I tried various voice synthesys on different computers and windows
versions but no success.
Is there any problem with server, or with rockbox utility or may i use
any alternative app to create my own voice files?
Thanks for your answers.

Re: creating voice files

In my experience using Windows, the last version of the Rockbox
Utility which was able to successfully generate a voice file or talk
file for that matter was version 1.2.6. This means that if you have a
player which was made stable after that point, you'll be unable to
generate a voice file for it. You can look into learning how to use
Cygwin and generate a voice file using that method or just use the one
from the Rockbox site. I don't know of any other method for
generating voice files. I'm hoping that the next release of the
Rockbox Utility has this feature fixed.

I can't find any bug report related to this.

Unless the people who work on Rockbox Utility actually get told about
these problems, they're rather unlikely to fix them.
