iPod serial interface

Hello!

I am currently trying to make Rockbox on my 1st generation iPod nano
controllable by the remote control of my JBL On Stage II external
speakers.  I suppose both devices communicate via the serial bus and
Apple's Accessory Protocol.

I configured the serial port to run at 19200 baud with 8 data bits, no
parity checking and 1 stop bit.  I also enabled bit 3 of general purpose
port C and the serial device 0 itself (after a glimpse in the iPodLinux
serial driver implementation).

For first tests I just polled the serial interface for incoming data. 
However, as I pressed a button on the remote control no data was being
received by the iPod.  So either the serial interface is not properly
set up or the JBL device is really not sending any data to the iPod (for
whatever reason).

Any ideas what I might have done wrong?  Do I need to activate a special
signal so that external devices "know" that an iPod is attached?

Any hints are welcome.

He admitted the mistake in the IRC channel, and requested help from the 
developers to change the message. If you look in the IRC log on the 
rockbox.org front page (or with ViewCVS), you will see that the message 
is changed (by me) to:

"Improved code for the splash function: spare some calculation, fix a 
bug for screens wider then 255 (ipod 5g), fix FS#5775 by displaying 
complete lines instead of word by word."

The splash background being too dark on the X5 remote isn't a
problem caused by the LCD controller. The problem is that the X5
is the first target where two LCDs with a depth > 1 are
attached. The apps/gui code doesn't handle that well, and uses
LCD_LIGHTGRAY (the #define for the main LCD) for setting the
splash background on the remote LCD (where it should use
LCD_REMOTE_LIGHTGRAY). This maps to darkgray (by chance - could
have been black instead as well - urgh!).
Unfortunately I don't have a simple idea for fixing this...
Maybe TiMiD (the original author of the apps/gui code) has one.

Samsung YH-820 based on PP5020

I would like to use the RockBox firmware on my Samsung YH-820. It is based on
the PortalPlayer chipset 5020 (same as iPod Mini). I do not mind porting or
developing but I do not know how to get started. I have used the mi4code to
decode the mi4 firmware upgrade, but do not know how to get RockBox ported to
this player. My main need is for Ogg Vorbis support.
Thanks in advance for any help to get me started

1. Read the NewPort wiki page - it having a PP5020 is just one little piece
    that is known, there are still lots of more you need to figure out.

2. Try the tatung bootloader from Rockbox CVS

That's actually very interesting imo. I was going through the Gnu gpl but I 
can't figure out if it has anything to do with registered trademarks.

Hi all.

We received a "Cease and Desist" letter from a law firm representing The 
Tetris Company, which holds the trademark "TETRIS". They claim our "Tetrox" 
plugin infringes on their trademark "Tetris" and demand we remove it.

After consulting US and Swedish lawyers, I have decided to abide them by 
renaming Tetrox to "Rockblox". Old members will remember this was the name 
of the plugin that Tetrox replaced.

The issue here is that trademark law is what I call a "soft" law. We do not 
use the word that they have registered, and yet a judge may still find us 
infringing. They reason is that a word/mark is deemed infringing if there is 
"likelyhood of confusion". That likelyhood can only be decided by a court, 
and going to court in the US costs a truckload of money even if you win. In 
short: It's not worth it.

In addition to the trademark claim, they also claim copyright on "features" 
of the game. However, the lawyers agree with me that those claims are 
nonsense so we can safely ignore them.
