One Third Octave band analysis using Praat on Mac Os

Dear Praat users,
I am trying to perform a One Third Octave band analysis using Praat on my mac and calculate centre
frequencies and their amplitude for each of the 21 one-third-octave bands (80 to 125 Hz, 126 to 160 Hz, 161
to 200 Hz, 201 to 250 Hz, 251 to 320 Hz, 321 to 400 Hz, 401 to 500 Hz, 501 to 630 Hz, 631 to 800 Hz, 801 to 1000 Hz,
1001 to 1250 Hz, 1251 to 1600 Hz, 1601 to 2000 Hz, 2001 to 2500 Hz, 2501 to 3200 Hz, 3201 to 4000 Hz, 4001 to 5000
Hz, 5001 to 6300 Hz, 6301 to 8000 Hz, 8001 to 10000 Hz, and 10001 to 12600 Hz). I understood from previous
posts that somebody already asked and successfully applied a script written by Paul but I wasn't able to
find the script. Is there anyone who can help me with this script?
Thanks
Marco

yes, you can do that, namely by doing "Pass Hann band". It works only
if Praat continues to be able to extract the original F0, i.e. the
signal should still be periodic with the original periodicity. This
is not a guaranteed solution, therefore.

How to modify formant frequencies with Praat ?

Hi,

I'd like to know if it is possible to move formants one by one with Praat ? (and also change their amplitude)

I already tried the "change gender" command, but it only allows the user to chose a commom coefficient for
all the formants.

Thanks in advance for your answers,

Erwan Pépiot

Can Praat read .m4v files?

I would like to use publicly available .m4v files in Spanish for pronunciation teaching purposes. Can
Praat read these files in and is there sufficient quality to generate spectrograms & pitch contours, or
will I need to create new .wav files?

praat as a tool ofr speech and language therapy

Hi

I'm a speech therapist in norfolk, I'm currently working with a patient who has apraxic dysarthria and
intelligibility is being limited by vowel distortions. I've used praat as an analysis tool in the past and
was wondeting if it would be appropriate as a biofeedback tool for this patient (it's not ideal but there's
not much else out there to my knowledge).

Would apprciate any suggestions

Rachel

Re: LPC smoothing and individual harmonics

I have the same question, and apparently nobody ever answered. Somebody, please?

Thank you.

RE: Re: LPC smoothing and individual harmonics

Maybe I'm not understanding you, but what if you just draw one, then draw the other, like this:

select Sound aja
To LPC (autocorrelation)... 16 0.025 0.005 50
To Spectrum (slice)... 0.275 20 0 50
Rename... LPC_Slice
select Sound aja
To Spectrogram... 0.1 5000 0.002 20 Gaussian
To Spectrum (slice)... 0.275
Rename... FFT_Slice

Erase all
Select outer viewport... 0 5 0 4.5
Black
select Spectrum FFT_Slice
Draw... 0 5000 0 0 yes

Red
select Spectrum LPC_Slice
Draw... 0 5000 0 0 no

Note to Paul: I think the history-pasting mechanism in v. 5.2 for Windows XP may not work correctly - it seems
to drop the command (i.e. when I tried to paste the action Draw... 0 5000 0 0 yes it only pasted 0 5000 0 0 yes
into the script window).

Max dB on 1 peak LPC smoothed data

Dear Praat-users,

I have two questions somewhat related:

#1) I have taken some 18 sound files recorded via the program "Audacity", converted said files into MP3's,
transferred "To Spectrum" via Praat, and utilized LPC smoothing (with only 1 peak). I would now like to ask
Praat to give me the exact dB/Hz at which my 1 peak lies on the graph. I can retrieve the desired value
manually by placing my cursor at the point I think is the highest peak but I would like to remove human error a
much as possible and I feel there has to be a way to achieve this goal via Praat.

#2) Along the same lines as the above question... is there any way Praat can give me recordings of max dB/Hz on
multiple formants for a given sound file? Instead of having to convert the file "To Spectrum" with "LPC
smoothing", I would like to know if I can just query the formant values for all major resonance frequencies?

Your advice/input is much appreciated and I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Ajay

Buenas noches,

well, quick and dirty I would start like this:

1) Load in a sound file and click on "Edit"
2) Select a point or a region, where the spectrum could be interesting
3) Click Spectrum/View spectral slice (Ctrl-L)
4) Go back to the praat Objects window, select the extracted Spectrum
and click Draw/Draw... and just click "Okay" for now
5) Recognize the Spectrum in the Praat Picture Window
6) In Praat Objects again chose LPC smoothing... on the spectrum and
just click "okay".
7) A new spectrum object should appear in Praat Objects
8) In Praat Picture select "Pen/Red" and maybe a dotted line whatever
9) Back to Praat Object, Draw/Draw... on the newest spectrum object.
10) You should have now a spectrum and a LPC smoothed one superimposed
on it.

That was of course really quick and dirty, I think you will have to
adjust the level of the smoothed spectrum to have them really
superimposed ... Feel free to ask again then ... hope it helps so far.

Greetings,

you draw them on top of each other, as the others proposed. In the
Draw window for the Spectrum, you should set the Minimum Power and
the Maximum Power to the same values for both Spectra, e.g. to 0 and
100 dB. In that way, you don't have to do any scaling on either of
the spectra.
