encryption practice

anyone wanting practice using openpgp encryption should consider
joining the pgpnet yahoo group. messages are encrypted to the public
keys of all current members. twice a year pgpnet conducts a roll call
to make sure subscribers are still actively using pgp/gnupg. therefore
there is always a pool of people willing and able to exchange encrypted
email.

pgpnet has newbies as well as members who have been using pgp since
shortly after its introduction. it is a safe place to make mistakes
while learning the capabilities and limitations of openpgp.

yahoo members can find the group by searching for 'pgpnet' on the
website. nonmembers can join by sending an email to

pgpnet-subscribe <at> yahoogroups.com

Newbie

Hello PGP-Basics:

How hard is it to get to get family, friends and business contacts to
use encrypted email? Is PGP the way to go or is there a better
method? One reason I ask is that the PGP-Basics list manual I was sent
when I joined was last revised 9 years ago. Some of the links are
broken and most of the information looks out of date. Does anybody
really use this stuff or is it a dream that died? During 2002 there
were over 1000 posts here some months. There have been 13 so far this
year.

I have been playing around with a Tails anonymity USB drive. GnuPG and
Claws Email are included. Is GnuPG a reasonable choice or should I go
for real PGP? I have made a key with GnuPG. Next step?

Vic

PGP Public key trust confusion

Hi,

I have a doubt in PGP public key trust concept. My name is sohan
badaya, but assume I created a key with name of Barak Obama e.g
barak.obama <at> gmail.com and I uploaded my public key into pgp key
server. Now some some american security team want to sent mail to Mr.
Barak Obama, so they mistakenly got my public key and sent encrypted
mail to me. As they thought that mail id is barak.obama <at> gmail.com.
I can decrypt it as I have private key and can read message. Is it correct?

Other question I read that before using any key we should first verify
key. So If key contains signature of your known person then you can
trust on this key. But assume I created 3-4 fake keys(that contains
name of your known person) and signed my public key with these keys.
So now my public key also contains signature of your trust person.

Is it all correct. Am I getting this concept correct. Is user Id is
the attribute that we use to verify a person??

Please please let me know it. I really appreciate any kind of light on
these concepts.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Sohan Badaya

Decrypt failed! (No secret key) Code = 17

More than one person gets this error when they try to decrypt a message I send them. I use to have no problem
sending encryptions and out of no where this started happening. The only thing I could think of that's
changed is a few months back I couldn't remember my passphrase and I was thinking that my be related to "No
secret key."

'Decrypt failed! (No secret key)
Code = 17'

I tried creating a new master key and got the same error. I completely uninstalled PGP and even removed my key
from the PGP database. I then reinstalled and started over from scratch and the problem persists.

Please help!!!

Revoke PGP public key using bouncy castle API.

I want to Revoke my pgp public key using bouncy castle api. I have generated revocation certificate. But I
couldnt find how to revoke public key using revocation certificate. how to achieve it? I found one method
addCertification in PGPPublickey.java.

I tried this method but actually this method adding any revocation certificate to public key. But actually
public key should add only that revocation certificate that is generated from corresponding private key.

If anyone has idea please let me know.

PGP Digital signature confusion

I have big confusion in pgp digital signature and web of trust concept.
I just want to tell my understanding and want to review by you. Thanks in advance.

Web of Trust ?

First thing is upload our pgp public key to server and get 2nd person pgp public key.
2nd person will encrypt messge using our public key and also sign it using his private key.
Now first thing we need to make sure that this person is really trust worthy. It may be fake guy.

so we should validate his public key. Public key will contain digital signature of other people. If we know
many guys of those digital certificates then
this guy is known to us or to our friends. If we don't know anyone. or trust level in certificate is not good
then we should refuse
key.

Same thing if third person say us to send mail. We will first verify his public key to check his trust level.
then only we will send mail to him.

This is called Web of Trust. It make sure that receiver or sender is trustworthy.

Digital Certificate use?

Message ----apply HASH funtion--->get Message Digest ---Sign using private key---> get Signed Hashed
Messge. that is called digital signature.
so Our message structure is
plain message + Digital Signature. Encrypt it using public key.
Send it to 2nd person

The message is fed into a routine called a HASH Function (a function that converts one string of characters
