How is postfix restarted nightly?

I noticed that postfix is restarted nightly at around 50 minutes past
midnight:

(Excerpt from /var/log/maillog:)
Sep 2 00:49:33 myHostName postfix/postfix-script: stopping the Postfix
mail system

How does this happen? Cron.daily runs at 01:25, Anacron.daily is empty,
and there are no other crontab entries that could be relevant.

Greetings,
    Heinzi

PS: The reason that I'm asking is because sometimes postfix fails to
stop properly during those nightly restarts, leaving the mail system in
a broken state (lots of defunct child processes, postfix can only be
restarted after "kill -9"-ing the old "master" process).

Re: How is postfix restarted nightly?

Are you using endian smtp proxy or mail scanning or spam rating under your endian configuration?

Re: How is postfix restarted nightly?

Hi!

All of the above. I’m using SMTP proxy with spam filtering, virus scanning and file extension blocking.

Greetings,

    Heinzi

Re: How is postfix restarted nightly?

According to your email it seems postfix script is stopping the services and not the endian firewall. Would you please send me:

I thought that postfix-script is not a service, but that these log
messages rather indicate that "/usr/sbin/postfix stop" was called either
manually or by some other script.

Now that I checked the logs again, it doesn't happen *every* night, but
rather every now and then:

root <at> EFWmoser:~ # zcat /var/log/maillog-*.gz | grep "postfix-script: stopping"
[...]
Aug 1 00:53:58 EFWmoser postfix/postfix-script: stopping the Postfix mail system

Aug 30 00:50:46 EFWmoser postfix/postfix-script: stopping the Postfix mail system
Aug 31 00:51:47 EFWmoser postfix/postfix-script: stopping the Postfix mail system

Sep 2 00:53:48 EFWmoser postfix/postfix-script: stopping the Postfix mail system
Sep 3 00:51:49 EFWmoser postfix/postfix-script: stopping the Postfix mail system

Strange. (Sep 2 is where it hung. Apparently, the script that's calling
"postfix stop" is calling it multiple times if the process does not want
to stop.)

I don't understand what you mean by this. I'm running an Endian firewall
in a hosted environment, i.e., on a virtual machine. Mails are scanned and
virus checked and then forwarded to the internal mail server (an Exchange
server machine).

Re: How is postfix restarted nightly?

Yes i was asking about external server that is Exchange in your case.

Actually same thing happend with me but in my case it was Squid which was restarting every now and then. Messages log does not say much.

In my squid case my log partition was full and due to no space for further logs it keeps on rebooting the service....

Check your /var/log partition.... usually it is 20Gb.... which was in my case...check yours..

Let me know..

Good idea, but there seems to be sufficient space available:

root <at> EFWmoser:~ # df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 603M 505M 68M 89% /

/dev/mapper/local-var

/dev/mapper/local-config
                        99M 4.9M 89M 6% /var/efw
/dev/mapper/local-log

Re: How is postfix restarted nightly?

We are reaching to nowhere :-)

I am scratching my head that what could be the issue. Try to stop some services and see if it happens? Clamav update itself every hour. May be when it receives definition from server it restarts and when it doesn't nothing being restarted...????

Proxy and Windows Update

Hi everybody!
I've got a problem with Windows Update and HTTP Proxy today.
Users that have to update are not filtered by content filtering (they
can reach Windows Update domains as widonwsupdate.microsoft.com) but
squid don't let download exe and cab files; squid logs say:
