Some EFW Network issues

Hi All,

Being new to the EFW experience I’ve come across a couple of things I need some clarity on, they are as follow:

1.       Installation of onboard NIC: I’ve installed EFW2.2 RC3 on a machine with a MSI motherboard with the Intel G31 chipset and a RealTek 8169 onboard NIC. Initially the system worked but after a couple of restarts it lost connection to the br0 / eth0 connection and on running the ethtool I found that the mode for this NIC was fiber and not mii and all efforts in trying to reconfigure this using the ethtool –t failed and it keeps the mode on fiber. I have reconfigured the NIC configuration so that my 2nd NIC, a RTL8139, would be used as the Internal (Green) NIC via the command line but the GUI still picked it up as the RED NIC, is there a way to force the RTL8169 to use mode mii or are there issues with this NIC / Motherboard that has not been listed as a bug?

2.       Routing configured via the GUI does not work and is not displayed in the kernel routing: I configured 4 static routes via the GUI but these routes does not work and is not displayed when route –n is executed

3.       Will EFW2.2 RC3 Work on a Dell PE 850? I have a production machine running Shorewall which I want to replace with EFW, which we will obviously test first before taking it live but the testing will be done on a normal machine until I’m satisfied then it’ll be loaded on the current Firewall but to make sure that that I don’t waste your time later on with silly questions I’d rather make sure that EFW is compatible with the PE 850, has anyone done this?

4.       On the above, is there a possibility that I can transfer the FW rules from one server to another without having to reconfigure the entire system? I’ve tried this but if you do a full backup of Settings, Database Dumps, Logs etc it restores the NIC information as well which causes some problems, especially trying to reconfigure the NICs on another system.

5.       Where will I find installation files for EFW? Say I want to use the server for other functions as well i.e. a Zabbix server, will I be able to compile application on EFW? Where will I find libraries like the c++ compiler etc?

Any help will be appreciated.

With regards,

Janco van der Merwe

Any word on the EFW 2.3?

Hi,

Is there any word on the release version of Endian Community 2.3?

Or some way to perform the updates in 2.2 rc3, as it is with various
problems and saw that a lot has been repaired.

Regards,

Marco

Re: Any word on the EFW 2.3?

More than likely, just as the last release, there won't be a true
upgrade path for those of us on 2.2RC3 going to 2.3.

It'll more than likely be a "backup config" "install from scratch"
"restore config" process.

Re: User Agent Question

Sorry everyone, I worked it out myself:

Needed to change the IE  string in the useragent file to be : MSIE,Internet Explorer,(MSIE.*Windows\sNT\s...;\sInfoPath.*[)]$)

Subject: [Efw-user] User Agent Question

Dear Group,

Could someone please help me. USD $20 reward via PayPal for the first person who can offer a correct solution...

I want to block all browsers, except a customised version of Internet Explorer. We are using user agents to distinguish the browser.

Our browser in XP 32-bit has this user agent:

user-agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; SCHOOL BROWSER; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; MS-RTC EA 2)

IE has this user agent:

user-agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; MS-RTC EA 2)

I want to ask how can i edit the \var\efw\proxy\useragents file to support this.

The current rule for IE would also block our browser (if the IE browser is set to be disabled) which is the problem....

<snipped>

MSIE,Internet Explorer,(MSIE.*[)]$)

SCHOOL,SCHOOL Browser,(SCHOOL BROWSER)

<snipped>

USD $20 reward via PayPal for the first person who can offer a correct solution to allow SCHOOL but block MSIE (by giving the correct strings for this file).

With Regards,

Richard

I guess that might depend on how long it takes to fix the last 31% of bugs listed on the roadmap:
http://bugs.endian.it/roadmap_page.php which (to my intrained eye) seems to slowly keep growing.

Perhaps somone from Endian could chime in with a more definite timeline for completion of that release.

Re: RES: Any word on the EFW 2.3?

Efw has a few problems that way - it’s a nice firewall, but it seems few ppl are working on it, it runs on an OS
that doesn’t support upstream updates, and it's even difficult to know what OS it actually is in terms of
wanting to install drivers or utils.

Guess that might make it more secure, but it seems difficult for some ppl. If it runs as-is on your hardware,
and has everything you need, it’s great...

Actually, I believe that updates are included in Enterprise Maintenance.

Endian's business model is similar to RHES and SLES. if you need
updates , subscribe, and maybe with more subscriptions they can increase
their development staff.

Yes, that's true.

There are alternative business models around that include updates, have a look at www.vyata.com - that has
a free version that has an update repository available. The aim is to sell a value added product to your
enterprise customers, I'd suggest.

It seems rather short sighted to me to limit the ability of the Open Source version to get updates. I like EFW,
that's why I use it but the fact the current 2.3 release is way overdue and no communication about the delays
might lead one to surmise that there's problems with the product.

Yes, that's true but it doesn't apply to the Community version. Isn't the aim of a mixed OSS and Value Added
product to encourage the take-up of the product and an active developer community? Both of those seem to be
lacking for EFW, a few people post updates to the product but it's a tortuous process for a novice like me.

With a few notable exceptions, where is the community involvement in the project? Have a look at the Italian
mailing list, they get even less responses than the English speaking one.

Re: RES: Any word on the EFW 2.3?

Only problem is Endian is rather expensive especially for countries with a weak exchange rates. Endian
don’t offer you many options. Like a cheap option for updates to the open source edition or other
creative options.

While we discussing Endian as a general rule they are extremely poor at communicating to the open source
community who follow the product, version timelines are impossible to obtain, even feedback is
extremely limited. Features have supposedly been completed but not available to the open source
community to test, which you would think would benefit them and their enterprise clients by more thorough testing?

Anyway I love the product but I think their business philosophy is preventing them from growing. Maybe
somebody from Endian or somebody who knows more, can provide some real feedback?

Looking forward to a positive response.

Steve
