Re: EFW 2.2 Beta1: hwdetect script - bug (within XEN DomU)?

Hi

Is there a xen kernel available for the 2.2 beta2? If there is I'd also like to try testing it. :)

Regards

Bill

efw 2.2beta2 error during install

When i try to install 2.2beta2 i get the following error.

panic: cpu too old for this kernel

I will list my hardware specs below, but 2.2b1 and 2.1.2 work just fine on
it. i was wondering if this was going to be fixed or if that is just the
way it is. I have 512mb of ram in it.

Thanks, for any help.

Re: EFW 2.2 Beta1: hwdetect script - bug (within XEN DomU)?

Hi,

we switched to kernel 2.6.22.15 for endian firewall 2.2 because we had
some problems with RHEL 2.6.18 on our hardware appliances (probably
related to rtc/clocksource). 2.6.22 is a very stable kernel and is
definitely a better choice for efw because it features a more modern
netfilter/networking stack. In our labs it ran on 30 machines for 1
month without any problems, 2.6.18 just freezed randomly every 2-5 days.

The only drawback is that it doesn't have XEN support out-of-the-box,
but until the final release of 2.2 we will include an alternative xen
kernel. Right now we're concentrating on bugfixing/stabilizing the
system and we didn't have much time to test the xen kernel, please
give us some feedback about 2.6.18-53.1.4, if it runs fine and stable
we'll include it into the final release :)

Regards,
Raphael

Re: EFW 2.2 Beta1: hwdetect script - bug (within XEN DomU)?

Hi

I've just had a chance to test that kernel (it boots OK and I can login) but it throws a couple of errors. I've
found the following on the console at boot time and they're also in the pcimodules log:

FATAL: Module generic3ps/2 not found.
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.18-53.1.4.endian7xen/modules.dep: No such file or directory

I'm not too hot on debugging this sort of problem but I'll do what I can. If you tell me what you need other than
the above info I'll try and get it for you.

Regards

Bill

Re: EFW 2.2 Beta1: hwdetect script - bug (within XEN DomU)?

I use a couple of distros based on centos, and I know of a
problem running it on more modern mainboards.

Can you tell me what chipset and cpu you're running?

Re: EFW 2.2 Beta1: hwdetect script - bug (within XEN DomU)?

I'm running this on a Dell 1600sc with CentOS 5.1 for the Dom0 and two DomUs and the EFW DomU. It has a
ServerWorks GC-SL chipset and dual 2.4Ghz Xeon processors with Hyperthreading enabled.

Re: EFW 2.2 Beta1: hwdetect script - bug (within XEN DomU)?

Guess I should have asked before, but can you show the
results of this command:

cat /proc/interrupts

Re: EFW 2.2 Beta1: hwdetect script - bug (within XEN DomU)?

Ok, then this might not be the same problem.

You have APIC enabled and the OS is using it. (this is a
good thing) You can tell because of the high numbered IRQs
(up to 279:) in the first column. Without APIC, only the
standard 16 IRQs will show.

The problems I had came from the centos distros having
acpi=off, and not including pci=nommconf in
/isolinux/isolinux.cfg, and in the grub.conf file. This
disabled APIC in the OS for me.

If you google 'pci=nommconf', many of the hits will suggest
modifying and re-burning the install cd (.iso) after the
adding the parameter to /isolinix/isolinux.cfg, and also
adding it to the grub.conf file after the OS is installed.

I modify the /isolinix/isolinux.cfg file, and I replace
'acpi=off' with 'pci=nommconf'. And then burn a new install
cd. Stability problems then go away.

I read somewhere that having acpi=off can sometimes affect
dual core systems, but you might have to experiment more
than I have to know.

By the way, acpi is different from APIC mentioned above.
