Email Issues W/2.0 om Macintosh Computers

I have a small network, 33 computers have email access.

The Mac's (all 6) can't receive email, the mail client (mail 2.0 and 
2.1/2.2) hangs and won't download or send as long as the pop3 proxy is 
active, all the PC's  with various mail clients (outlook, outlook 
express, thunderbird) work flawlessly; shutdown the pop3 proxy and the 
Mac's as well as the PC's work great.

Any ideas? I've looked for a couple of weeks in the forums; my apologies 
if this is a repeat of an old issue.

I'm not a Postfix user but in Sendmail there is a feature called 
"delay_checks" which allows exactly that. I'm pretty sure Postfix has 
something like that also. You might look at the Postfix config in endian 
and see if that is on.

problem with pop3 email efw 2.0

on efw 2.0 production firewall i have pop3 proxy enabled with antivirus and
antispan checked.
everything works fine, spam messages are being tagged correctly for the most
part.
after 2 or 3 days, users are unable to access email accounts.
outlook users get error...unable to access the pop3 mail server
mail.whatever.com
if I disable the email proxy everything begins working immediately.
that night, I re-enable the pop3 proxy and then reboot and all works fine
again for several days.

Suggestions on how to resolve?

Had the same problem. Besides had duplicate emails and corrupted attachments. 
Solved the problem adding more memory because it started to continually use 
swap.

How much memory did you have before and after?
This particular server has 1GB.  Running free -m results:

root <at> efw:~ # free -m
             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:          1011        338        672          0          7        144
-/+ buffers/cache:        186        824
Swap:         2023         34       1989

Not sure if adding another 1GB will offer better results.  What do you
think?

I don't think memory is your problem there. What do the logs say is 
going on. There must be some message when the p3scan is unable to accept 
connections?

Not sure where else to look, but the filtering the firewall log for P3SCAN
results in following:

Time Chain Iface Proto Source Src Port MAC Address Destination Dst Port

I reviewed said log for 3 previous days and see no error.  Where else would
I need to look?
